By the way Filo, what is the cemetery at around Hatfield Church called and the one over the road that is now something of a place of remembrance with a walk through?

I should imagine it's called Hatfield Church Yard, I belive that place of remeberance is also part of the burial ground of Hatfield Church and there are stil graves in there, the headstons have been rearranged all along the side walls, they did much the same with the old Cemetery at Thorne

Winston Rollins ? Musician. Played with Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies & Jools Holland's band. Definitely was around Bentley as a child, & went to Don Valley.

I presume you mean Dennis Rollins - born in Birmingham but raised in Bentley.
Weren't they brothers ?

if we're talking sportsmen there was the guy, a PE teacher, who finished 3rd to David Emery in the 100 metre hurdles at the Mexico Olympics in 1968 I think. He's so famous I've forgotten his name but he was from Donny and he won an Olympic medal.

You might just add Mick Cowan too. Quick left arm seamer played for Yorkshire and England. Born in Leeds but lived for years and years on Thorne Road just at the bottom of Wheatley Hills - opposite Robin and Martin schools.

Wasn't that John Sherwood Bob?
I think that his wife might have won a medal as well.

Tony Woodcock (Arsenal)

Tony Woodcock wasn't born in Doncaster, and it's very unlikely he lived here either when he was on loan from Forest

Woodcock was from Eastwood. The second most famous person from there, the other being D. H. Lawrence.

Yet another South Yorkshire lad who was picked up by Wolves via their nursery in Wath. Another was Ron Flowers from Edlington who played for England and was in the 1966 World Cup squad. His brother, John, played for Rovers.

Joe Harvey, later captain and manager of Newcastle United, also came from Edlington. He also started his playing career with Wolves.

Premier League winner and latterly undistinguished Rovers utility player, Mark Atkins. Also famous for probably being the first ever player to represent Rovers who had been in the panini sticker books.

If we're going for anyone who has played professional football, then Dave Cowling, Danny Schofield and Graham Hyde to name but three.

Wilts to be honest just read an article on him in classic rock which got me thinking about this
They aren't my cup of tea but it was good to see Doncaster get a mention

John Parr
Kevin Keegan

He's not Donny, he's a Worksop lad.

Gillian Coulthard. Record breaking England player. Thorne.

Gavin McDonnell Super bantamweight boxer unbeaten.

Often wondered about a connection with Doncaster and Wolves - used to work with a guy who had gone to Wolves, sadly he was murdered a few years ago

Peter Martin may have plied his cricketing trade the wrong side of the Pennine hills but he lived in Wheatley Hills, on Oakhill Rd.
