Yorkie - re Kevin Keegan, he would be 3 years older than me so I can't claim to have known him at school but the dates would definitely be correct. I am sure that in his autobiography he states that he attended St. Peter's in Lord Street when he lived in Spring Gardens. Their main rivals football wise were Beechfield against whom they had  many a good scrap on Town Moor. This was definitely still the case when I played for St. Peter's a couple of years later. I know he later attended St. Francis Xavier in Balby and St. Peter's High in Cantley so I guess we'll have to track down a copy of the book to sort out the Lord St. mystery.

He definitely didn't go to St Peters in Lord Street and he certainly didn't go to Waverley.
St Francis Saviour is the infants/juniors he attended.

I also, like Keegan, went to St Francis Xavier junior Catholic school on Balby bridge, and then likewise to St Peter's in Cantley.

Keegan left both school as I started them, due to hin being about 4/5 years older.

Yes I will give way on that I was working on the fact we were in the same year at school. We were thrashed in that game which might have been       something to do with St Peters having 5 Donny Boys players and we had none.

Another memory just passed through my head....KK got me in to the Directors Box at Chelsea when he was playing for Liverpool. I still recall the platform shoes and the unforgettable perm he had that day when he gave me the tickets. My father was the contact,KK always called him uncle George. KK gave my father his first Wembley cup final ticket promisedwhen KK was at Scunny, memories!

KK was born on Valentines Day 1951 (Feb 51 was a good month & year for Footballing talent) although my prowess was exposed round about February 1962 !

I was a very good player as a youngster. I was told often that I was destined for a Rovers and England career. Then disaster struck. My elder brother kicked me on my knee and I was never the same player after.

Terrible thing for a six year old to take in.

Keegan was in the year below me and I played against him in the house competitions, we won 3 - 1 and I scored from half way line. All the practice of kicking at the posts in rugby paid off. Jez Hemingway was in goal and it was St peters House (me) against St Josephs (Keegan) .

You could not get away with anything with the red coat on... Local battle as we all know was Wilby Carr ggggggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I was in St Paul's (Yellows). We had 7 players in our house that played for the school team, so we had enough talent to take it easy.....Guess what?  We didn't win a game and came bottom!

A life lesson learnt!

St Peter's House (sorry for above blunder) won the mini league at both soccer and rugby (League) I might add that year. Like St Paul's our house rugby team had 2/3 of school team. We just had to win or Mr Peterson who have branded us. U.S. and not the country

That takes me back Mick. I was with Jez Hemmingway in the same class at St Peters in Lord Street. Then we went our separate ways. He went to Cantley and I went to Sheffield (Not that it did me any good)
He had a few hundred yards walk and I had to get two buses probably leaving an hour before he had to!!

Yeah. An all round nice lad was Jez. Never saw or heard of him since. I speak to Martin Lanaghan just about every day, I believe he was in St Paul's and played that year in the house comps, he never lets me forget he played in the rugby comp as well on the wing.. He played against me and then never again, he said I had an influence on him.....

We were allowed to the have time off to go to the game provided that we were in our school uniform, the 'twaggers' were spotted out of uniform in their casual clothes and were disciplined the next day.
I was a good boy on the day, I can't remember if we got in for free on the day because of the St.Peters connection.

... being just 3 days younger than KK I used to say to people as a joke " that I had been born in the next Bed to KK - and that my Mother had brought the wrong Baby home" and then I used to say "and do you know she never once disagreed with me" . Then in his Book he opens by saying he was born at Home in (an address .... in Armthorpe) so that killed that "fib! !

However my REAL claim to fame - I thought - was that when I played Right Half for Stainforth at Armthorpe in 1962 where we drew 3-3 that KK would have been in their Team (probably scoring three) even though he might not have remembered the defence splitting pass that produced the goal of the Game !!!

Now I am gutted cos there may have been a good reason he did not remember something as special as that - he may not even have seen it !

I too was in that school side! I remember John Bytheway, Gary Nesbitt, Ghasper Grant, Russell Yates, Billy Lockwod, Graham Chambers, George Head. It was not a bad team having reached two area finals but not good enough to beat Hatfield who beat us in both finals. One final was due to be played at Belle View but was cancelled at the last minute!!! The only consolation  was that I got my runners up medal from Alick(the king)Jeffrey. Now that's worth remembering.

I think Keith was about same age, I played for Warrenne YC against Stainy Y.C and gave JT's (Woolfie's mate ) called Ron Whitton a right hoofing. and we won, thankfully none of the names played, I believe they played for The Old Club. Chabber sadly died earlier this year but had the sense to love in Dunscroft and did not stay on the "Dark Side"  George too married Glynis from The Crescent and lives over here. I see him regularly at Rovers and I see him around, was talking to him last week. He stopped reffing he says because his knees give up.

I once played for a Team (Stainy Youth Club or Thorne - not sure which) and we lost 22-0 at the back of Hatfield High School

Worse I was Centre Forward and myself and another player you will know MB - same initials as you - rounded their Goalie and with the ball just needing knocking in I wheeled away in celebration. Unfortunately so did the other MB and the ball rolled wide.

I cant remember if that goal might have brought us back into it at 11-1 or 16-1 but you just NEVER know.

The tall Brian Turner lived just down the backs to me. He actually played for Donny Boys and on the Belle View turf as I recall. He was at least 1 year ahead of me at school. I don't think I actually played a game with him but I am not sure!
I don't get back to Stainy but I was talking to my cousin in Thorne at a funeral last year and Brian's name popped up in conversation apparently he got married recently to an old neighbour of mine.

No. Brian 3 years older than me ( I think) I am same as Gary Nesbitt ( well 4 days older ), John Bytheway, Billy Liddle, Dave Roebuck, Duncan Pickles, Peter Furr, Gary Carling etc.

Yes I know them all with the exception of Garry Carling. I was in the year above. Duncan's brother, Howard,was in my year. Duncan was a very strong defender but lacked the finer skills in the game. I do recall that Duncan's brother in law was on Wednesday's books at the time.

Did we actually play in the same team? I was a regular in the 64/65 team. I didn't get on with Smithy the sports master and as a result I never played for the school team in 61/62/63. But The Head, Mr.Alison, did send me for trials at Donny in my last year but after six trial games I got the "Sorry son" Donny got that decision right. On reflection it worked out really well for me in the end as I really enjoyed my career working in London.

Didn't Nesbitt's boys play for Donny Boys?
