3 Goalscoring Quiz questions
« on February 06, 2016, 02:16:33 pm by Dutch Uncle »
With the match off, and with Williams in with a shout of 20 goals this season, 3 questions:

1: Who was the last player to score 20 Football League goals in a season for us?

Answer: Peter Kitchen with 23 in 1976-77

2: Who were the last 4 players to score 20 goals in all competitions in a season for us?

Answer: Barnes, Blundell, Heffernan, Cramb

3: No player has ever scored 20 Football League goals in a season for us at level 2 or level 3 (I am not counting the old regionalised Division 3 North). Which 2 players have the most number of league goals in a season for us at level 2 and level 3?

Answer:
Glyn Snodin with 18 in 1984-85 for level 3
Reg Baines with 19 in 1935-36 for level 2

2. I can think of three - Barnes, Blundell and Heffernan. At a guess for the last we have to be going back to the 70s or 80s. Sure Ian Nimmo got close but think he fell just short in 80/81. I would go have to go for Peter Kitchen.

3. Guess - One would be Tom Keetley?

Kitchen with 23 in 1976-77 is right for Q1 1879

Barnes (28 inc 25 in Conference in 02-03), Blundell (20 inc 18 at level 4 in 03-04) and Heffernan (21 incl 11 at level 3 in 06-07) are 3 of the 4 in Q2

1. Would have to say Peter Kitchen again. Sure he was around the 20 mark in more than one season.

I am not counting Division 3 North as level 3 1879 - in my eyes it is level 3.5. Keetley never played for us at level 2.

The level three leading seasonal scorer is more recent.

The other 20+ in all competitions is later than Kitch

The other one must be pre non-league days for question 2 - Colin Cramb?

The number of goals is higher than that, but less than 20

18?

The highest at level 2 in a season is 19 (long ago)
The highest at level 3 (not regionalised) is 18 (relatively more recent)

Who were the two players?

Afraid not TRB. It was pre WW2.

Amazing figure for Glynn, given that he played left back most of that season. I wonder if anyone has ever scored as many goals direct from free kicks as he managed that season. Must have been a dozen or so. There was a spell around that time when a free kick 20 yards out was as good as a penalty for us.

He was inch perfect with 'em too wasn't he? That one at Valley Parade that won us the amazing match when we had 8 men - I was right behind it when he hit it. The gap between the end of the wall and the post was a foot. It definitely wasn't any more. But bang! Straight through it!

That was also the case more recently when Theo took a spot kick!

Reg Baines?

I knew you wouldn't let me down TRB

Bert Tindill also scored 18 at level 2 in 1955-56

The point being we have never had a player score 20+ league goals for us in a season at level 2 or level 3 (excluding old regionalised divisions), and only once have we had a player score 20+ in a level 2/3 season in all competitions (Heffernan)

Clarrie Jordan will have scored that many but it was Division 4 north i think, Paul Todd scored a few as a midfielder?, in the same championship winning team.

I think you mean Div 3 North Sammy? Div 4 wasn't invented until the 58-59 season - way past when Clarrie Jordan had retired.

Think he got to double figures but only just. He did average about a goal every other game though.

Thanks, he did seem prolific at the time, one of those "he's going to play for England" until you realise you've taken no account for the fact he was playing in the fourth tier.
