Book suggestions, please?
« on January 21, 2016, 09:25:49 am by SoundbiteBarmyArmy »
So, I enjoy reading, but I don't do it as often as I should/would like to.

I've just bought myself a Kindle Fire, as I think and hope it'll encourage me to read more (and it's good for Netflix, apps and when I go on holiday in April, etc).

Can anyone suggest any good reads to me, please, which are available on the Amazon store?

Thanks in advance.

Have you got Amazon Prime? If so they let you borrow a book for free every month from the kindle owners lending library, and you also get to download a free book every month from a choice of 6. Depends what you're into really, I read the Wayward Pines trilogy using the library, there's also a trilogy where the first book is called Brilliance that's pretty good. As for paying for books, maybe try the Millennium trilogy (Girl With The Dragon Tattoo etc), a bit twisted but a good read. I really like the Ben Hope series by Scott Mariani too, need to read them in order though.

You can get a lot of the classics free. I got Picture of Dorian Gray, Treasure Island. Bought Ben Eltons Time and Time Again, a time travel story, was ok.

I haven't got Amazon Prime, and, to be honest, I'm not planning on getting it - it's £79 a year, isn't it?

Thanks for the heads up on your suggestions. GWTDT tickles my fancy, I must admit.

Thanks again :)

The Hobbit is a must. Then Lord of the Rings trilogy. And then The Silmarillion.

Amazon Prime is 79 quid a year but in my opinion it's worth it. You get Amazon Prime Video which is similar to Netflix, they've just started doing a music service that has loads of albums available, you get the Kindle books each month as mentioned above and you also get next day delivery on stuff you buy on Amazon. Only works out at £6.60 a month. I hasten to add I do not work for Amazon!!

I've also got loads of books on a USB stick my brother gave me but I read a fair amount and doesn't really bother me paying for books. Although it does annoy me that some Kindle books are more expensive than an actual book!

A lot of items can be bought cheaper than via prime though.
I have it but if I don't need it in a hurry I go for free delivery and get it cheaper.

Another thing they do if you've got prime and don't want it delivered next day is you choose normal delivery and get £1 credit to spend on Kindle books. Soon adds up if like you say, you aren't bothered about getting your stuff next day. Still turns up pretty quick too.

As for more recommendations, I like Da Vinci Code style books, so if you're into that sort of stuff (or shite, as some might say!) anything by Dan Brown, Steve Berry, Andy McDermott, Will Adams. I also really liked The Hunger Games even though they are meant to be books for kids.

It depends which genre you enjoy. Bernard Cornwell, Conn Iggulden are great for historical fiction as is CJ Sampson. John Connelley if you like crime with a supernatural twist.

If anybody wants any software to look after their Kindle content, or even convert from one file format to another, can I suggest this;

http://calibre-ebook.com/download

Works a treat.

The correct title is "Nineteen Eighty-Four". And your attempt at wit is a joke in itself L J, as per.

Shhh! his attempt at being an intellect is quite funny in itself!

Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. A book they should make kids read at school in my opinion.

Animal Farm another one of my favorites, although, much like 1984, I wouldn't say it was intellectual Bentley, it's taught to 14 year olds.

I've heard that Dan Brown books are good reads, so I will bear him in mind. As for The Hunger Games, our lass has them on her Kindle, so hopefully in the future she'd be willing to switch Kindle's for a bit.

I'm interested in the whole Hitler thing, you know, why he did it, his life, etc, etc. Any suggestions for decent books regards that?

Thanks in advance.

Nowt to do with Mr. Hilter but I would thoroughly recommend The Count of Monte Cristo to anyone. In hard copy it can look a bit daunting as it's a big old book but on an e-reader (I first read it on my iPhone!) you don't really notice the size and soon get right into it. A brilliant read, and if you do give it a go, stick with it through the incarceration period, it gets better from then on!

It is a great revenge tale. I really like The Woodcutter by Reginald Hill which is also a revenge tale in a modern setting, and possibly easier to read.

It's THE revenge tale as far as I'm concerned, Dutch. Perhaps because it's so long and evocative the payoff is so much better.

I'll have to look up The Woodcutter though. Sounds like a good 'un for a holiday read.

Two Robert Harris novels Enigma and Fatherland are superb reads.  I read Enigma first (since made into a film) and it weaves the basic story of the Bletchley park code breakers with a romantic tale but very well done.
Fatherland though was a fascinating post war tale based on the premise that Germany won the war.  Absolutely gripping yarn.

I am currently reading John Keegan's History of the Second World War which will give you a good general background on WII and the run up to it. I presume it is on kindle but cant be sure as I still use those luddite paper tings.

Shirer's Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich is still one of the best.
