Rovers starts on Tuesday May 24 at 10pm on Sky 1

Rovers is an original take on the goings on in the clubhouse of a lower league football.

Established in 1884, Redbridge Rovers FC are one of oldest clubs in the English club system. Attendance figures average around 27. The team are currently lying second from bottom in their league and their ground is two miles down a dirt track, next to the local rubbish tip.

Running the place is matriarchal, hardworking and loose lipped Doreen. Her meat raffles are legendary and have kept punters coming through her doors all those years.

Other characters include obsessive fan Pete Mott, who likes nothing more than talking stats over the scratchings with his best mate Tel - only Tel has recently thrown Pete for a loop by coming out as gay and bringing his new boyfriend Mel to the club.

Then there's Pete's young lodger Tom, who has got eyes for new barmaid Sam, bossy pensioner Francis and a whole host of other loveable eccentrics.

The club has seen better days, but its fans are a passionate and tenacious force. Together they make for a hilariously dysfunctional family, who are bound together by a (some might argue) misjudged love of the perennial underdogs that are the Rovers. After all, it’s never just about the football; it’s about who’s singing in the stands next to you.

Seen the ad with the Ian Dowie joke. Looks very similar to Early Doors, which I liked. I'll give it a watch.

Early doors was quality. If this is the same vein it should be good.

I watched it on Saturday, I liked it. The thing that made me chuckle was that I could see shades of quite a few of you fellas in the supporters...Mentioning no names.. lol..

It's a gentle, funny programme. and like you all, rather likeable. :)

Jossy s Giants now that is showing your age.
Forgive me if I got this wrong but I think that it was written by Sid Waddell or if not written produced by.

Who remembers 'United', a football club based TV series in the 60's, featuring the fictitious 'Brentwich United'?

It was filmed at Stoke City's Victoria ground, and 'Brentwich' played in the Red and White stripes of Stoke City, enabling the use of real Stoke City footage for featured 'Brentwich' games.
