Farage quits!

So, having achieved his life's ambition, to shit in his beloved country's nest, and stir up a bit of casual racism and xenophobia in the process, this ex banker is quitting.

What will he do next?

Try to become leader of the Tory party

Try to become leader of Labour

Retire to the Algarve or South of France

Retire to Barnsley or Rotherham

Wreck the United Nations

Join Donald Trumps diplomatic corps

The word just after the referendum was that he was going to get kicked upstairs to the Lords.

Quote
Mr Farage said he would "bury the hatchet with anybody" including UKIP's sole MP Douglas Carswell, who tweeted an emoji picture of a smiley face as the leader's resignation was announced.

Welcome to 21st century British politics.

Yes ... I am afraid it is all a massive mess - and another plank (no pun intended) of the Leave campaign has now gone.

It looks like they all had a plan but nobody seems to be sticking to their word and principles (no surprise there). No wonder this has just appeared on BBC Website

Well, the Brexiters did want the UK Parliament to be the UK's supreme power, didn't they?   ;)

It does make me wonder if Article 50 will ever be triggered. The new PM may seek to negotiate a better deal than Cameron was offered, and then there might be a second referendum - or it might even be decided by a General Election.

The big downside of that is that we would face about 4 years of uncertainty. And it would further erode trust in politicians!

To be honest, it would have made more sense to have had a referendum based upon what terms were definitely on offer instead of all the could/would/should/will claims - from all sides - during the campaign we've just had. Too many people have voted based on no hard facts whatsoever.

I'm instinctively in favour of the will of the people being put into practice.

Question is, what is the Will of the People?

If, say, over the next year, it becomes unarguable that we will not be able to have serious restrictions on freedom of movement AND remain part of the Single Market, AND the consequences of that start to unfold (major economic slowdown/recession, permanent loss of value of the Pound, major loss of inward investment) would the Will of the People still be the same?

Or does the Will of the People remain always and forever what it was on 23 June 2016?

The more of the Brexiters promises that can be ticked off as untrue, or at least not going to happen, the bigger the case for a new referendum.

After all, the basis for having the one we've just had was that the EU wasn't what we originally signed up for - surely if we don't get the exit that we've just voted for the principle is exactly the same?

I think the EU would have to offer something substantive for there to be a case for a second referendum. Maybe that  "emergency brake" on migration that was talked about then removed from Cameron's final package.

The Will of the People is whatever the Government of the People believe it should be.

David Cameron led us into the referendum by promising that whatever the result he would be Prime Minister the day after and if we had voted out he would trigger Article 50 on Friday 24th June. Well we know what happened to those promises. Whoever the next Prime Minister is they are not bound to follow Cameron's promises - it was only an advisory referendum - so we await to see what happens.
