I think it is just a conjunction of prepositions
Maybe you board a bus, plane or boat but get into a car rather than board it.These are services you pay a fare for. I know you can in a car as well but maybe that is the reason.
I guess the distinction is that buses, trains, planes are generally shared forms of transport. If I said "I arrived in a plane" you might think I'd flown it myself.
