A nice drink.....

Last week I had an opportunity to drive up to Scotland for a few days.  I spent them wandering round various distilleries. And now, I'm sitting here, sampling the goods I brought back....

Bloody awesome! I'm a peat whisky lover. So Laphroiag and Lagavulln and Ardbeg are obvious. But tonight I'm sampling Port Charlotte Islay Barley from the Bruichladdich distillery. Never had it before. It's lovely

I could spend the rest of my life drinking stuff from Islay....

Lovely place btw. Really beautiful. Plenty of places to stay. I didn't book anything - not the ferry, not the rooms. Just turned up. No problem at all. Even had a cream tea by the side of a deserted beach on a beautiful warm sunny day.

The only slight snag with a few days on Islay is the temptation to spend waay too much money. I ended up buying a half bottle of 21 year old Laphroaig for example. They only sell it in half bottles. It's not cheap. Still, I've got a bottle of Lagavulin that, quite by chance, I've kept a while. I discovered not long back it's worth quite a lot now. Not bad considering I bought it at Heathrow duty free!

Anyway, sorry. I'm maudling.  But I do like this stuff rather a lot....

I've liked Laphroiag for decades. In fact I've liked it so much I never drank it. Used to buy the stuff - but hardly ever drank it. Scared of turning into an old soak. But times are a changing. I don't care any more whether I turn into an old soak or not. And I'm enjoying it!

I like the Speyside malts,Glenlivet is a good distillery to visit as it's free and so is the wee dram at the end of the tour.

I'll always remember going round Drybroughs brewery in Edinburgh while we on the Edinburgh Tattoo about 1980 ish Little fella at the start of the tour turned around and said. "Shut yer gobs don't ask daft questions and I'll get yer round and into the bar in 10 minutes"

He was true to his word and we finally fell out of the bar 4 hours later  not having paid for a thing following week we went to Scottish and Newcastle hour and half tour round the brewery and one free pint

You whiskey experts may be able to help me.
About 25 years ago I had the pleasure of sharing a bottle of malt whiskey with a bloke from the next caravan when we were on holiday in the Lake District.
It was the smoothest, best whiskey I have ever had! and would like to find out what is was.
The only memory I have of it is that it had a distinct flavour of an oak barrel.
Any suggestions of which brand or type it could have been?

All I can offer, Hound, is what is is not. It can't be from Islay. I'm afraid I can't offer any more than that. Was it a strong taste? Or a gentle one? Did the taste linger after you swallowed? Were there any other tastes that came through after holding it in your mouth a few seconds? Or after swallowing? I won't know the answer if you can offer any more, but someone might!
