Nearly 17,000 gate at Portsmouth was impressive!

I had to double check the numbers before I posted this, nearly 17,000 gate is a fantastic number, and also 450 Rovers supporters is impressive, quite a distance to travel. Do Pompey always get good gates?

Their average attendance last season was 16391, so yeah.

I remember when we were both in the 3rd division around 1982, they were getting 20K crowds then I seem to recall.

Out of interest (and a level of laziness) does anyone know the record crowds for the four divisions?

They must all hafve come to see the ROvers. I hadn't realised just how many ex Rovers are in that Portsmouth squad now.

Enda Stevens
Curtis Main
Xxx Lalkovic
Bennett

Surprised one of them at least didn't score tbh....

I think Brighton were getting 30,000 at the end of their 4th division promotion season about 1964/65.

I remember Brighton's largest crowd that season was 36000+, but don't know if that is the largest level 4 attendance. Their average was 17907, higher than all Division 3 and only beaten by 4 Division 2 clubs and 19 Division 1 clubs

Edit: Division 4 Wiki says
The highest average league attendance in the Fourth Division was 19,092, achieved by Crystal Palace in the 1960/61 season. The highest attendance at an individual match was recorded the same season: 37,774 for the Good Friday game at Selhurst Park between Crystal Palace and Millwall.

I remember that Palace side beating us 1-5 at home. There was rain and thunder that bad that the players went off for about ten minutes.
When they came back on their goalie, Vic Rouse gave his cap to my mate.
Dave Sexton played that day and Johnny (Budgie) Byrne who became the only player to be capped by England whilst playing in the 4th division.

Idler, you may know if this is true.
Back in the sixties to the season that Alick was the top scorer in all four divisions with 36 goals for the season and looking (as he was) like a superb player again, am i right in thinking that there was a rumour going round that he might just get an England squad call up?
It may be rose coloured specs but i seem to remember something of the kind.

I think that it was more fans wishful thinking than likely to happen hound.
His talent was amazing though and I never saw him until his return after three leg breaks.
He was pinging balls all over the pitch and one wing to the other with ease.
He could hit the ball like a cannon, little back lift too most of the time. It's just a crying shame that there wasn't the same tv coverage then as now.
I know the game was a lot slower then but he always made time and space.
