New England Manager
« on November 15, 2016, 09:25:58 pm by Drfc1996 »
Looks like an announcement could be made by the end of the week, Southgate as low as 1/33 at some book makers

Opinions? Personally I do not think hes the right man

There's a lot of negativity about Southgate not 'being the right man' but who is?

Who's available that's better than him at the moment? He's done a great job with the U21s and knows the set up well.

I know we shouldn't get over excited by a friendly but we've looked half decent tonight! If he can get us countering like we have at times tonight then why not? For me, he's a solid choice. Germany let their assistant step up and he's done okay. Spain's manager stepped up from U21s too.

There's worse choices out there!

Apart from the last 5 minute England defended excellently against one of the best attacking teams in the world and going forward, mainly on the counter admittedly, we had spells where we looked like world beaters ourselves. Can't ask for much more.

Yes we can, we should be closing out games like that, Spain upped the tempo and our arses fell out

He should get the job, in my opinion. Done a good job in these four games, I don't really see anyone better being available (since Wenger isn't) and he has worked with this set-up and many of these players for a few years now.

Quite happy for him to give it his best shot. My only concern is that he might not be strong enough to demand better from the players when the chips are down.

Others before him have failed in that regard and when we get to tournaments we fail.

Anyone who can inspire belief and convince players from min 1 to the final whistle, we're better to have the ball than not. Our mental capacity to keep rather than hoof, especially in latter stages is poor.

They put it in for him tonight. Watch them 'down tools' as soon as he get's the job. Tonight that was the most enjoyable England performance i have seen for years. And but for the substitutions and the side being very naive defensively near the end we would have won.
We play like this in friendlies at times but when there is something on the game our lads disappear. It was a tasty game a few challenges that were a bit more like football used to be.

Nothing like 80/90's stuff but more like a proper game. I wouldn't give him the job because once he is in power they won't play like that again. We have players that decide when they are going to give their all. It needs a tough manager who get's them playing almost every time. Southgate isn't that man, which sounds stupid after tonight but you just watch when he is appointed!.

Don't agree with that, football has changed most teams now seem to afraid of losing so play 10 players behind the ball at all costs, today Spain didn't and you could see the difference, I would rather have played France or Portugal in the euros I think we would have faired far better, who else is there to be England manager that is English?

I would rather us play friendlies away at places such as Mexico in conditions we struggle with. We face other teams in favourable conditions all the time it doesn't test us enough.
We need to be putting them in conditions they don't feel comfortable with that's when we will see what they are made of. Get them playing in the Azteca or similar places.

Stealing an argument from Radio 5 the other week, is the lack of enthusiasm for GS purely because he's been behind the scenes for years so we can analyse very little of him? Everyone who talks about him speaks highly of his tactical ability but are we as fans more interested in a name - someone who has recent success on their CV? I'm open minded. His approach seems to be to let premiership players play the premiership way. We know that technically that's not the best but its what these guys are used to so why not try and let them play the way they know how.

If our recent failures are down to a mentality thing then I'd argue he's not the right man for the job but in that case I'm not sure who is.

crazy idea playing Mexico away in mid season with 12hr flights .Managers would love that after a qualifying game ,and as for Southgate he is the only choice for me he is progress from the under 21`s and knows the youngsters.

That is a good point especially as we have no players who play abroad, that however wouldn't fit in with the premiership money train, who much prefer them back at there clubs on a Wednesday morning rather than on a long haul flight....As for Southgate, the same situation apply's,there isn't any choices as nobody English gets a decent job to put themselves in the Frame it's the price we pay for the monster that is the premiership....Southgate is ideal for the FA...Squeeky clean and not likely to rock the boat...No real pedigree of course but I doubt that's high on their agenda this time...
The fact that Southgate is seen as the most viable option for me is the saddest aspect to all this,he shouldn't even make a England managers shortlist...

Probably as club managers do, he wanted to look at other options since it was only a friendly !

You have to feel a little fear for Southgate if he gets the job.....I can't think of anything he's been involved with that might be slightly 'dodgy'...except a Pizza advert a few years ago.

All that will change if he gets the job....the sh!thole Press will dig something up from his past.....

That's a good point if we qualify for Russia i would expect us to deal with the cold better than the warmth of other places. Mexico doesn't fit in with preparing for something like that but it would give us experience of playing in extreme conditions at the other end of the scale. It might be a good idea for when a tournament is in warmer climes.
The premier league hold too much control as Wing Commander suggests. Brazil play all over the world. They play very small developing nations as well as bigger ones. Fans like to see different opponents. We face Germany away after facing them not long ago. What can we learn from that game?.

Russia in the Summer is not going to be cold. Humid perhaps. But not V-Vladivostok on the v-v-landing...

The players going out drinking when told not to should stop Southgate getting the job. Get Glenn Hoddle in as manager or a foreign manager who knows our game. Then in the youth sides put potential  young English coaches to learn the job.
Gerrard, Lampard, Shearer, get them involved and try and get it organised top to bottom. Give Hoddle or another a three or four year contract to give the guys in the youth sides time to get better as coaches. Then hopefully one of them will be ready by the end of the four years.
The players want Southgate because he is a pushover it's proven already.

Okay. Firstly, why should it?

And on what basis should Glenn Hoddle be appointed, exactly?
