January transfer window
« on November 27, 2016, 09:29:58 pm by Filo »
Given our position in the league, the January window is critical for us, I would be hoping the owners are looking at it and telling Fergie to identify players that will help us push on in L1 should we get there and provide him with a little war chest to achieve that aim

Mentioned on another post - 4 players for me one undisputed no1 keeper, one defender, one midfielder and one forward - tho Mason Mason and houghton would be great to get sealed for the end of this season as two of em!

Surely marosi has done enough to be considered no 1?

Yes he has. I imagine it will be another young lad with Etheridge going on loan as the free press predicted.

It would be an incredible mis-step to show less confidence in our keepers than we already do. We've got this far with Marko, stick with him. Another great save yesterday.

We will sign another front man and possibly a midfielder and that will be it. We definitely don't need a centre half. We've got three quality ones.

as well as rovers strengthening in Jan it is also important the challengers carlisle luton plymouth don't progress in the facup on Saturday

carlisle have a tough one v rochdale
meaning we don't want any of them getting a "biggie" in the 3rd round and getting cash rich

yes it can be argued it would distract them

remember exeter made a million when they beat rovers & then got Man u

I've said all along, don't worry about Plymouth. We are favourites, Pompey second favourites then Carlisle and Cambridge. Everyone else is a million.

We need an experienced goalkeeper somebody who has mileage on the clock but still a bit left to give. We need a calming presence in the goal.
A different option to play wide left who can cross a ball and is dangerous on the break.
A quick striker who can finish somebody different from what we have. And unless a good option comes up for centre back that would be equally good if promoted or if we stay in this league. Then three would be enough for me.

He's already said 1) we won't and 2) bigger clubs than us will be in for him now.

And I don't see the obsession with getting another keeper. Marosi has done nothing to warrant being dropped at random and he's only going to get better.

I don't see him getting better i think this is as good as it get's. If we are to get promoted there will be very tight edgy games where you are reliant on you're keeper. If it's Marosi or the other fella upto now they i wouldn't like our chances.
You will know when that game turns up and we lose it rather than getting the result we need. Sullivan won us many points over the years he was with us, we need somebody of that ilk.

Top of the league next week and people think we need a new keeper. Bonkers stuff.

The key word is strengthen. Absolutely no one will be replaced.

Strengthening is what i'm suggesting. You improve what you have while you are near the top you don't wait until you lose a few. The squad we have has a lot of options but can still be improved.

DEfinitely a striker needed, apart from that it's just depth in one or two positions.

I would have agreed about a striker but now I'm not sure. Mandeville has stepped up to the plate and McSheffrey will be back in January.

A midfielder and a keeper for me. Possibly a left back. A lot will depend if we keep the loan players, particularly Houghton and Mason.

A few would benefit from going on loan, particularly Etheridge, Garratt, Beestin and Longbottom.

Fergie has stated that a striker isn't a priority so I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get one. A pacey left winger for me to balance Blair on the right.

I don't see him getting better i think this is as good as it get's.

Marosi is good enough to be a first team regular, and he is young so why do you think he has reached his peak???

I think you're probably right. I think Calder will return and we will look to replace him.

The big position we have little coverage for is Houghton - who's been outstanding the last two games. I don't mind Keegan but not to the same standard.

Houghton seems very keen to stay and finish the job here. I think that will have some influence on those who have to make the decisions at Chelsea.

Houghton will be difficult to get cover for, that position is probably the most important outfield position in the team, players with his atributes are very rare

Keegan is OK for that position in terms of breaking up the opposition play, but Houghton is much more dynamic.

Baudry could play there?

Next season though, we could sign someone else if not Houghton but don't forget McCullough is also well suited to that role..

Sign Houghton to the end of the season and we'll be OK..

We don't need to be looking at Keepers..Marosi has done more than enough to cement himself as our no1 and I cant understand anybody who thinks we need to strengthen there..For me we don't need to be signing much now the squad are fit...Extending the loans definetley and maybe a forward and that's enough...

I don't think another right winger would hurt to keep Blairy on his toes.

Not sure we need a forward.. mandeville is growing in that role. Williams should be fit soon and then there is MacSheffery to come back..

I can't see a really good quality striker coming here to warm the bench?

BUT we need some depth, lose one more striker we're stuffed.

it's not a cut and dried descision...If I felt Mcsheffrey had anything to contribute this season I would be happy not to sign anybody up front...However with his age,the serious injury he has and his recent injury record I would be surprised to see him in a rovers shirt again...So think we need to go out and look for a player that can cover Blair and also play up top if needed...
