Ref for tomorrow
« on January 27, 2017, 04:15:07 pm by ReadingViking »
Yeovil Town v Doncaster Rovers
LEE SWABEY
Marvyn Amphlett and Kevin Howick
Fourth Official Mark Russell

That would be Lee Swabey from Plymouth - hardly seems right!!

Could be worse, that fourth official could have been MICK Russell.

This is the ref that took charge of our fixture at the Ricoh last season handing out six yellow cards to Rovers and none to Coventry.

He also did the game at Crewe and was a lot better.

Personally I don't find it odd that a referee from Plymouth should do one of our games at this stage of the season. A few questions might be asked if it was later on and the promotion race was tight.

He may be tempted to send off 1 or 2 Yeovil players, as they play them on Tuesday!

Are the powers that be so stupid. Why have they put themselves in a position yet again that if there are any controversial decisions tomorrow they leave themselves open to huge criticism for appointing a Plymouth ref.
Total incompetence in my opinion.
I forgot only League 2 football so it doesn't matter does it?
Silly me again.  :headbang:

Whats controversial about it!! You do all know that Plymouth is over 76miles from Yeovil as the crow flies. That's a similar distance as Doncaster to Coventry why would there be any bias towards Yeovil.

You appear to be forgetting which team from which town is in second place...

Exactly, for a minute I thought it was me that had lost the plot.

I believe all referees are asked which clubs they support.

Funnily enough he mentions the potential conflict of interest here.

http://m.westernmorningnews.co.uk/plymouth-referee-lee-swabey-realises-wembley/story-26694791-detail/story.html

As I pointed out earlier though, I don't think the powers that be consider these things until we get to the business end of the season.

Interestingly the assistant referee Darren Cann was originally appointed to Crystal Palace's FA Cup tie this weekend. Then it was pointed out that he's a former Palace youth player and has not done any Palace games. He's now going to be at Tottenham.

It did once host a European club competition match though.

In Swabys article he says that he could never officiate in a match that could affect Plymouth (his team)?
A win for Yeovil really could do that.

Does sound like a  conflict of interest. But given the circumstances, he might try to be fair as possible, so we might benefit from some of his decisions, that might not otherwise been given.

What about Wakefield ?

I suppose that the question could be more "precisely" written / asked but there are loads of references on Google including this one.

Largest city to never have a top flight team is Plymouth.

Pretty sure I've read somewhere that Wakefield is the largest city thats never had a Football League team.

wakefield a city ????  even bighton somehow became a city

surely Gloucester and Winchester must beat wakefield -  much bigger and never heard of any historic football teams there

I don't  think Walsall is classed as a City.

Gloucester only 127000
Winchester only 120000
Wakefield nearly 3 times more 333000

Big postcode area Wakefield. Covers Batley and Dewsbury. The city itself isn't that big though.

When I was a lad, Wakefield was the county town and administration headquarters for the West Riding County Council

The 333.000 you are quoting for Wakefield is te Met Borough Council.
That includes Dewsbury, Batley, Pontefract, Castleford and surounding areas.

Yes the good old days

Three Ridings with Beverley as "Capital" of the East Riding and Northallerton as "Capital" of the North Riding and good old Wakefield the "Capital" of the best bit (my bit) the West Riding !

Guess I was always partisan even at 7 or 8 !

Northallerton is still north Yorkshire's county town despite York thinking they should be

This one has got to be the best though.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Davids
They certainly have never had a top flight team or hosted a top flight game.
