20 Goals - Just to avoid Confusion
« on March 01, 2017, 05:44:26 pm by Dutch Uncle »
John Marquis is the first player to score 20 Football League goals in a season for us since Peter Kitchen in 1976-77

In 2002-03, Paul Barnes scored 25 goals in the Football Conference (28 in all Competitions)

There have also been three who have reached 20 in all competions since then:

2006-07: Paul Heffernan 21 (only 11 in the League)
2003-04: Greg Blundell 20 (18 in the League)
1996-97: Colin Cramb 21 (18 in the League)

I would not wish to airbush these players' feats from our history, especially Paul Barnes

There are quite a few who have scored 27 or 28  in all competitions, but only 7 occasions when a player has scored more than that for us in a season ever. Three of those are by Tom Keetley in the 1920's.

Of the 7 occasions of >28 per year in all competitions - apart from Keetley's three all the other 4 are post WW2 - Clarrie Jordan 44 in 46-47, Alick Jeffrey 39 in 64-65, Colin Booth 38 in 62-63 and Peter Doherty 30 in 1949-50.

Of the previous (i.e. not including John Marquis) 29 occasions of >20 per year in all competitions, 11 were pre WW2 and 18 post WW2. Six of those eleven pre WW2 occasions were by Tom Keetley.

Note some goalscorers data varies across different sources. I have mainly used my gut feeling when sources disageee, usually giving preference to Tony Bluff's History of Doncaster Rovers.

Thanks again Dutch! The time frame for the majority of these scoring seasons proves to me that Marquis is having a really special year.

And I'm glad you err on the side of Tony Bluff's book as it's staring back at me on my bookshelf right now.  ;)
