I considered starting a thread in celebration of the day but didn't want to encourage the inevitable accusations of being racist!

If I want to celebrate St George's day I will, and I did! It seems to me it's those against it who get wound up about those who want to celebrate it!
Problem is especially back in blighty is that if you show the English flag too many PC idiots will call you out for been racist or the local council will warn you
When I lived near Huddersfield in the late 80's I used to work in a boozer that was an absolute nightmare on St George's Day. At the time it was one of the few pubs in the area that 'celebrated' it (when I say celebrated, what that actually meant was the landlord hung a flag of St George outside the pub). Every single headcase in the town would come down and get absolutely pissed as a fart and start singing anti IRA, anti Asian and every world war 2 song that you could imagine. A girl who I worked behind the bar with once asked one of these fellas if he realised the irony of singing world war 2 songs whilst also being a fascist given that we fought world war 2 to rid Europe of fascists. After his mate explained to him what irony meant he went nuts and had to be escorted out of the pub by the bouncers (any pub that has bouncers on the door during a week day afternoon is going to be a bit naughty isn't it?)Funnily enough, the landlord and landlady of the pub were never around to work St Georges day, they only turned up at closing time to collect their huge profits.

Funny this 'be proud of your country' stuff. Like why? Why should I be proud of an accident that meant my Mum happened to be in England the time I sprang forth? Why should I be proud of a nation of xenophobics? Why should I be proud of a nation that tolerates the spastics at the Fa, the Premier League and encourages the untold, unaccountable and manipulative power of Sky? Why should I be proud of a nation that encourages the Daily Mail and the Sun? Boris bloody Johnson and 2 evil women? Why should I be proud of a nation that lives in the past, has delusions of grandeur and can't face its own mediocrity?Cool. How many 'Angry of Tunbridge Wells' will that bring forth?BobG
