They seem to have a missile that will take out a nuclear type launch heading for Uncle Sam .

It seems that the yanks will launch a missile that will take out any threat very very very high up beyond the clouds .

What happens when you take out a nuclear bomb that high up in the sky ,will it still not cause havoc within the earths system .

Probably cause less problems with the earths system than it would if it landed and went bang!

The ICBM is not designed to explode on impact, it's designed to explode above it's pre determined target, if it does not reach that target it won't explode

That might be what it's designed to do but I bet it wasn't designed to be hit by another missile.

Besides which, isn't ICBM just a general description? Surely there are lots of types of ICBMs?

A missile does what it says on the tin, miss. It blows up in the proximity of the object it's trying to destroy showering it with a confetti of ball bearings, or similar. A hitile blows up on contact with an object.

So if the icbm is taken out at whatever height bits and bobs will fall back down to planet earth ,or with said bits and bobs be left up there just milling about.

Well if it was true to type and actually exploded, we would have an almighty problem with the electro magnetic pulse. That's one of the things air burst nukes were designed to do.
