I would. He can’t head, has a ropey first touch and a heart the size of a pea. Watch how many 70/30s in his favour he backs off from. His positioning is awful and his decision making worse.

He is only 20 and he is marginally better than Lund but that’s a bit like saying syphillis is better than herpes. I don’t want either.

Hound teams that we play see our right full back area as a weakness, not getting near the attacker is not a defence of bad defending, and as I have posted over the last few weeks I would play Mason just to have less changes to our back four.It does not however change my mind that he is a very poor defender, but we are stuck with him until the January window,if I was the manager I would definitely be signing two good steady full/wing backs as a priority before the ones we have got at the moment cost me my job.
At the end of last season when we were guessing the retained list I said then I would think very hard about retaining Alcock, as I thought his injury had robbed him of pace, and that he was not the player we had signed.,and that I would not sign Mason as I didnt think he was good enough, but I would keep Lund. Nothing I have seen this season has done anything to change my mind, although I respect yours,if you disagree fair enough.
But I will be surprised if in the first quarter of tomorrows match Portsmouth do not attack down our right flank like every other team has this season.

Selby,I don’t disagree that Mason isn’t a full back, let me make that clear.
As others have said, he is being asked to play there by the manager, possibly due to a failure to bring in a specialist.
However I contested what you said about him being involved in goals conceded in (that list of games) as a result of teams attacking us in the right back position.
The truth is that most of the goals conceded did not come about as a direct result of anything that Mason did or didn’t do.
In fact, in some of those games he was playing left back.

As for where Portsmouth attack us, you have a one in three chance of being right given that they will attack down the left, middle or right.

I'm glad fans are recognising that Mason isn't a specialist right back and has been asked to fill a number of positions in a short space of time, and he's only young. Was his loan spell here last season not his first ever taste of professional football?

I remember a few seasons ago when SOD got James O'Connor to play in every defensive position, constantly switching it from game to game and his performances never quite lived up to the previous standard again. And he was a very experienced pro, so Mason deserves to have some slack cut for him.

I think we should've signed another right back in the summer but nevermind. It would be okay if Alcock had come back with some semblance of his form from 2015/16 but it hasn't happened yet unfortunately.

Tbf apart form the goal Lawlor played well and made some good saves. As for Mason, think it might be time to give him a break and see how Alcock can take his chance.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the highlight of the game for me was Andy Butler diving full length to save the ball from going into the goal ..... with his face!!
And he just got up and got on with the game, no rolling around on the ground like some of these overpaid Premier League players.

That was a fantastic piece of defending Pod,also did you see him have a right go when Mason let his player take him on the inside run scrosss goal and get a shot away.

I've never seen a poster have such a vendetta against a player - Mason - and yet put up such a staunch defence for one who was so more clearly not good enough - Middleton. Maybe vendetta is a bit strong but you are certainly his most vocal (and one of the only) critics of his on here, whilst you were Middleton's only defender. I think you may watch a different game to the rest of us!

Nick your probably right, I have banged the drum too much, its what I see in him, which is a poor man for man defender, having said that I think he may be the best we currently have in that position, the best of a very poor lot.I said at the end of last season I would not sign him,and that I would have let Alcock go,and apart from going three at the back or playing a teenager we are stuck with them until at least January.
Its frustration on my part as I really do want him to play well, and all the other players with him,Andrew is a massive miss for us this season, but someone has to get a grip on Mason soon or we will be in big trouble.
We have signed him now,if it was up to me I would be loaning him and releasing Alcock in January if possible, and getting in two better players in that position, and I will try to lay off him now, hoping he does better.

You never read mrfrostsdad's opinions of Paul Keegan then?  OK perhaps "vendetta" might be a strong word, but he certainly had little if any time for Keegs..

Thing is, we all have opinions, and some see things and players, positions etc different to others.

If we had edged 2 or 3 games to win rather than lose - we maybe wouldn't be having these conversations?
