Bloody rubbish Boycott!! Scores of 9 and 6.

Yes but I have to sy he assisted in the best Run Out ever in that game

Farouk Engineer (left hander I think) cracked one through the Covers where Boycs was fielding. Yes really ! It looked all over a four and Engineer was expecting one too as he set off down the wicket

He (nor me either) expected the s-w-o-o-p of Boycs who stopped and returned the ball in one. Bairstow took it high above his head and with Engineer standing half way down the Wicket he gave Engineer what seemed like 10 seconds to "enjoy" his fate before knocking off the Bales

Brilliant bit of Cricket and one that I enjoy to this day. Superb !

He was the only Engineer not to strike in 1973!

It was against Colchester by the way.

Thanks BB!  I was trying to work that out, and without the benefit of colour narrowed it down to Colchester or Brentford.

Isn't the player running out of shot Bobby Gilfillan?
What season was it? I thought it may have been 68/69.

Still guessing Rabjohn myself - and Wilcockson at the back. Both could we wrong as I said earlier but nobody has mentioned my "speculative guesses" since - so I assumed I might have them right

Confident ? No - not my middle name !

Judging by Rovers colours, it was either season 66/67, 67/68 or 68/69.

I think you're right about Wilcockson, not sure about the player on the right. I thought it could be Gilfillan but after a second look don't think it is. could be Rabjohn.

Can you remember the result? Win, loss or draw. The records suggest it can't be 68/69 cos Jeffrey left in January.

65/66 won 2-0 att 6,035
66/67 lost 1-4 att 8,491
67/68 Colchester were in Div 3

Here are the 2 (so far) contenders .... I was going to cut half their faces off for realism but maybe that would have been going too far !

Based on the hairline I reckon my gut feel Chris Rabjohn is right. I have not gone through the Line ups for the games in question to see if either / neither / or both played so no clues there

It wasn't season 65/66 because Rovers didn't have a badge on the shirts then.

I think that you are right with the players BB.
I think Brentford played with black shorts and these don't look dark enough. Colchester were relegated to the 4th div at the end of 67/68 but we beat them 1-0 in March and I think that Alick went to Lincoln about November.
Chester City would be another option on Oct 8th, my 20th birthday. The only problem is it was a Tuesday night match and the sky looks like a day match. We won 4-3 after being 4-0 up if I remember right.
The badge in 67/68 was a square one, round in 68/69 so that would fit.

Having looked at the Team Sheets I reckon it was Gilfillan after all if the Opponents ARE Colchester but whilst Bobby G and Alick J both played in the 2 games above Harold Wilcockson played in neither as he would not sign for another 18 months to 2 years - so I look to have only one right

Mind you as I have posted before I did once confuse Gareth Taylor and Mark McCammon !

I thought the same about the badge. (unless badge was added during the season)

If it's 68/69 it's not Colchester. Rabjohn didn't sign until 1968. If it's earlier, Gilfillan played or if 65/66 it could be Laurie Sheffield??

My hunch about the year is it looks like the hairstyles were starting to get longer which points to 68/69.

It's a puzzle!

It is a puzzle and another thing to throw in is the Attendance. Looks quite big.

I am looking at FA Cups in the period - also that Number 6 looks familiar - come on we should get him between us ?

One thing is clear - this is better than my recent "What do the Numbers have in common" Quiz

I reckon it was a division 4 match season 68/69. Saturday 22nd March 1969.

Can't be BB. Jeffrey had left in Jan 69.

I think I've nailed it. 66/67. I'll show you why in a mo.

Colchester team photo 1966/67.

Of all the teams with stripes, Colchester we one of the few that had white cuffs and collars and the only one in our division at the time.

The numbers on the shorts are also a clue as not all teams had these, and on this team photo, you can just make out numbers on the left hand side of the shorts. Assuming they had to change from white shorts/socks to blue on that day to avoid the colour clash.

The shirts definitely look the same.

1966/67 Lost 1-4 in front of  8,481.

The only thing that bothers me about all the possibilities, is the crowd in the photo looks huge on the pop side.

Anyway, I present my case to the jury.

Here's the photo again

It is Alick and the opponents are Exeter City. The game was played on 7th September 1968 and Rovers won 3-1. Alick scored all three. His final hat trick for Rovers.

That's a good shout. My only concern was that Exeter had red collars and cuffs.

and we have 2 look-a-likes.

No 6. Sat on the right of the manager as we look. The big lad in the background stood on the left of the keeper middle row.

I think you may have solved the riddle TRB

I was thinking  it was Exeter and their no 6 was John Newman, but as has been said Exeter had red collars. Has anyone got the attendance for the 7th September game?

From Exeter City archive - John Newman.

And solves the issue with white collar and cuffs

Ha ha that'll teach me to read things properly, I thought the asterix at the side of his name meant not out , but it means captain
