It was always going to be like that. The UN will NEVER reach a resolution to take firm action when one of the Security Council big 5’s interests will be harmed.

But that’s not the point. The UN still works because, although issues can be vetoed, the vetoer still has to come and stand in front of the rest of the world and lie before them. And if people actually care about truth, that matters, because History ends up recording who the liars are.

Don’t think of the UN as an emergency service that can be relied upon to stop any current crisis. Think of it as a long, slow, inexorable process whereby the evil and the mendacious slowly get ground down.

It’s not sexy or exciting but f**k me, is it necessary.
