Mitchell Lund

I've just heard that McCann is that impressed with him he has taken him off the transfer list. I'm  glad for the lad as I personally  always rated him.

When you consider the Dickov / Fergie sides he played in was bloody awful he was ok & young as well - he could well be the right back answer we haven’t had in years

Not so sure. I think Fergie didn't like him cos he couldn't play to instruction. He had a tendency to dive in as well. More than happy to give him another go and fight with Mason for the spot.

I wonder if he sees him as a cb or rb, I’m not sure he was the pace or delivery to be a full back

He says he wants him competing with Mason.

Great decision by Grant. I couldn’t understand why fergie didn’t give him a chance? The few times I’ve seen Mitchell play in league 1 he looked good and he’s still young , plenty of time to improve.

In a flat back four he is more than capable as a full back. I seem to remember he was being asked to play as either a centre half or a wing back at various points in time, neither of which he seemed suited to.

Makes you wonder what happened before and after his injury last year to make Ferguson change his mind on him so quickly, though.

I liked him a lot before he got that awful injury against Yeovil and after he came back Fergie never really gave him a chance. The fact he didn't play much at Morecambe made me think Fergie was right to bin him off but we may see that was a misguided opinion if he can step up this year.

I'm really pleased for the lad and I hope he grabs the opportunity of this 'second chance' which GM has given him.

I rarely saw him have a bad game and I was disappointed and a little surprised when Fergie decided he didn't want him. He is more of a conventional full back, so maybe that didn't fit with Fergie's system?

I remember talking to Mitchell's Mum at an away game a few years ago. She was a really nice lady and a very proud Mum because Mitchell had just been given a professional contract with Rovers after being with the club since he was about 13 years old.
But she explained that the family celebrations at Mitchell's success in getting a contract were tempered with disappointment for his identical twin brother Spencer, who Rovers had released.

I've always remembered that conversation.

I wish Mitchell all the very best.

Don't get me wrong lads, I'm not trying to justify the fact that we haven't signed many new players yet, but doesn't Lund, Andrew, and Amos feel like 3 new players?; it does to me. Just a thought.

That’s a positive way of looking at it scawsby Steve. Amos looked good at Oldham and we badly missed Danny Andrew last season. Good luck to the three of them ! RTID ⚽️😀👍

Well we've got another specialist right back in the squad again, remains to be seen if he'll be up to task when called upon as it's been that long since he's had regular football but it's something.

He was always decent defending and seemed to put himself about i just worried about his touch and play in possession the few times i saw him play. I'd say its about right him been backup to Niall at right back.

Nice to see GM has settled on Mason at right back too think he could be a top end league 1 player in that position if played regularly

He was another that DF seemed to berate constantly when he was on that side of pitch. Also seemed to knock his confidence with the substitutions

I was told, although I forget who told me, that Fergie did like Lund, but often got annoyed by his inability to follow instructions.

I wonder whether DF's obsession with three at the back may have had something to do with the sidelining of Lund.

We shall see but he's certainly a decent squad player at this level.

He got injured very seriously and he lost  his place subsequently . He now looks stronger and more assured and more like a fullback should  .

To be fair he did try to ruthlessly micromanage. Not everyone can deal with that.

Hope he has improved over the last year or so because his positional sense was extremely poor. Also, he tended to dive in and miss the tackle allowing the winger a free run.  Mason will keep him out of the side anyway unless he gets injured.

Maybe Lund is just not good enough and Fergie will be proved right.

He didn't play much at Morecambe though so realistically i wouldn't expect he's suddenly 1st team material rather just a cheap backup who is young but fairly limited.

As mentioned above can’t see him as a starter at the minute but that’s for him to work hard and improve. Slightly different but Copps never came good until McIndoe left.

Comparing Copps & McIndoe with Lund is like comparing apples & bananas they are completely different - Copps & Macca are/were flare players predominantly wide-men & Lund is a fullback and fullbacks are specialists and in history of football a fullback has never been the most gifted player on the pitch - his job is to get the better of the opponents winger or wide man using physical means & good timed challenges

Branton the comparison was not between Lund and Copps/McIndoe as players but the situation - did you ever think Copps would be a legend whilst watching McIndoe ply his trade. The point I was making was that after MM left Copps grasped his opportunity

Copps has always been a better player, and by miles a better team player than McIndoe.

Used to attend matches with the late Pete Frankland who passed in 2009 & right from the very day Copps signed he had eyes for no other player - remember him very well arguing with Nick Clarke who was trying to tell Pete what a good player McIndoe was - Pete wouldn’t have it saying “you watch and see how great Coppinger will be for us he got right animated

Well last season we were desperate in the full back dept playing Blair and Rowe as wing backs which was a travesty imo.
Now as we approach the new season barring any injuries again we have Mason & Lund at RB and Andrew, Garrett & Amos at LB so let’s hope Blair and Rowe get used in their best positions this season.
If they are we will create many more scoring opportunities than we did last season.
Just need 2 more quality players imo to complete the jigsaw.
1 central midfielder and one goal scoring striker to play along side Marquis.

You get the feeling the players will be more comfortable with what they're asked to do in a more traditional 4 3 3, so we're more likely to see the best of them. Whether it's enough to win enough games remains to be seen but, I can't also help thinking a midfield General  might be a key position. Secondary, I would also like to see another goalscorer along side Marquis unless we see more goals from open play from Rowe, Copps, Crawford, Blair, Whiteman and the loan lad from Leeds. None of the above contributed enough goals last season.
