Moving The Goalposts
« on March 05, 2019, 03:41:07 pm by POD »
I watched an interesting debate yesterday on the Channel 5 Jeremy Vine show on the subject of increasing the size of the goal measurements to create more exciting football with potentially more goals scored.
Apparently this idea was first suggested by Sepp Blatter at FIFA a few years ago, but didn’t get very far.
The size of the goal frame has not changed since the late 1800’s, when players/goalkeepers were considerably smaller and less agile.
The reason why I bring this up is that over the past two weekends, I have watched four consecutive goalless draws on live TV and whilst the games are still interesting, the real excitement is in the goals.
What does everyone think?  Would it be a good idea to try this and if not, what else could we do to add more excitement to our national sport?

I am in full agreement here. with these 6 foot 7 goalkeepers about I think a 20% increase in goal size is called for.

When the rules of football were devised in the 1870’s and the current goal measurements agreed, the average height of a man in Britain was 5 feet 5 inches, whereas now it is approx 5/6 inches more - and goalkeepers perhaps 2/3 inches taller than that.
I don’t think that I would advocate such a large increase as 20%, but somewhere around 5-10% I think would see a big difference in the number of goals scored.

I think isolating the keeper/goal size from all else that has changed in the game since the early days is a bit naiive, or misleading.

There are enough goals. I can't see a problem. The last thing I'd want is more goals with all the time wasting, and of course the ad breaks that would go with that. Go watch basketball if you like "goals".

The only side of the game that is properly broke is the concentration of money in the top divisions, and the insane amount of advertising in the game. Include in that how Chelsea are being allowed the space to cry a river over their abuse in youth transfers. Definitely a case for "each time you cry you add a day onto being grounded".

No need to make the cross bar higher, just lower the pitch instead.!

I bet we would miss just as many, and probably hit the post more, they would be putting them just about where we shoot now he he.

We can’t be so bad, only three teams in the division have scored more than us.

Where does it end though? The Americans suggested making the goals bigger in 1994 for the World Cup and also dividing the game into four quarters for more TV advertising.

f**k all of that I say.

a 10% increase in size very reasonable then.
no changes to game time structure being discussed.
Goalkeepers should not be comfortable able to put their hands on the crossbar workout at least having to jump a bit.

Put the goal posts where the corner flags are. Would stop players heading for the corner to run down the time 👍😂

Didn't they trial extending  the 18 yard line as the offside line in Scotland some years ago, probably not a success as it doesn't still happen

The Watney Cup in the early 70s also trialled it.

Hadn't heard of the Watney Cup before. That sounds like a fun thing to see tbh. Bring it back imo.

Average national height means nothing. They still had men just as big as now in goal then, there were just fewer of them to choose from.

Doubt it, the average height of keepers his generation will be bigger than previously. My examples below are hardly scientific and there will be outliers but if you lined up, say, the best 10 goalies in the world from the 50s, 60s etc through to the 10s you’d see a progressive increase in height.

Sepp Maier - 6ft 1
Dino Zoff - 6ft
Gordon Banks - 6ft 1
Peter Shilton - 6ft

Gigi Buffon - 6ft 4
Manuel Neuer - 6ft 4
David De Gea - 6ft 4
