Rovers International XI
« on March 21, 2019, 11:31:11 am by NickDRFC »
Bit of a slow day at work so thought I'd put together an international Rovers XI. Criteria:

- You're only allowed one player per nationality
- Home nations count as different nationalities (so you can have one Scot, one Welshman, one Englishman etc)
- You pick the player based on their contribution to the Rovers - if you picked Neville Southall you'd get the fat lad who got to ground slower than Weaver's neighbour rather than the First Division Winner
- I'm limiting it to players I've seen play (started going mid-90s) but up to you if you want to include others - changes to mine below would probably be to include Jeffrey, Doherty & Bremner
- Formation at your discretion

My first bash (undoubtedly players I've missed...)

GK - Carl Ikeme (Nigeria)
CB - Mathieu Baudry (France)
CB - Steve Nicol (Scotland)
CB - Bongani Khumalo (South Africa)
RWB - Mustapha Dumbuya (Sierra Leone)
LWB - Felipe Matteoni (Brazil)
CM - Giles Barnes (Jamaica)
CM - Brian Stock (Wales)
CM - Paul Green (Ireland)
FW - Billy Sharp (England)
FW - El Hadji Diouf (Senegal)

Subs - Marko Marosi (Slovakia), Danny Amos (Northern Ireland), Gabriel Tamas (Romania), Abdoulaye Meite (Ivory Coast), Mark McCammon (Barbados), Yun Suk-Young (South Korea), Dino Maamria (Tunisia)

Gunnar Torfasson.

In terms of quality per minute on the pitch, the greatest player we've ever had.

Shelton Martis.

Although the reaction from his countrymen to seeing him play was to dissolve the entire nation.

Dave Mulligan (New Zealand) deserves an honorary mention as I'm sure he got international honours whilst playing for Rovers.

Uros Predic (Serbia) is worth a shout as well, though I'm not sure exactly how he'd ever get in that midfield.

Fair, was a big fan of Mulligan and completely forgot about him. I’ll stick him at LWB

Khumalo and Green both in the team in the OP. But I had no idea that DM4 was Jamaican - Khumalo our, Moore in and Furman in for Barnes in CM. South African - Jamaican straight swap.

Aren't we picking a best XI based on their time at Rovers too? If so, anyone selecting Ilunga or Chimbonda wants a talking to. I still have nightmares about Ilunga's "performances" in the hoops.

GK - Marko Marosi (Slovakia)
CB - Bongani Khumalo (South Africa)
CB - Dean Walling (Saint Kitts & Nevis)
CB - Mathieu Baudry (France)
RM - El-Hadji Diouf (Senegal)
CM - Paul Green (Republic of Ireland)
CM - Brian Stock (Wales)
LM - Michael McIndoe (Scotland)
AMC - James Coppinger (England)
CF - Iain Hume (Canada)
CF - David Healy (Northern Ireland)

Alright, I don't think we'd score too many up front but that midfield would give anyone a run for their money! Tried my best to get Denis Souza and Rodney Kongolo in too but alas, they just didn't make the cut.

Doesn't matter - this is about a team of unique nationalities, not capped players.
