Memorable Gigs
« on April 14, 2019, 07:22:18 pm by Herbert Anchovy »
Spent a car journey earlier this week telling some young lads at work about some of the memorable gigs I’ve been to over the years. Before wives and kids arrived on the scene I was lucky enough to be able to go to loads of gigs, from back rooms in pubs to huge stadiums. When I shared these with the lads it firstly made me feel old but secondly gave me a bit of much needed credibility with them! In no order, my most memorable gigs were:

Madness at the Lyceum in London in 1983
Oasis at Madison Square Garden in 1995ish
The Smith at Hammersmith Palais in 1984
Kasabian in Paris in 2005
Motörhead at Hammersmith Odeon in 1985

Fontaine’s DC this weekend at Brud in Leeds. Thought they were good supporting Shame last year but they have got even better. They ARE the new Arctic monkeys for the new indie fans.

Some decent ones there HA

My three most memorable ones were.

Stone Roses at Stratford-upon-Avon leisure centre in June 89. Only about 150 people there but everyone there knew they were experiencing a phenomenon just waiting to explode.

New Order at the G-Mex in Dec 1989. Just before Technique came out. They were at the top of their game. They took the roof off the place.

May 1986 The Redskins at Leeds Poly. Back when the Left had all the very best songs.

November 1987. Chicago Jackmasters House Tour at Sheffield Uni. Astonishing night, with the inventors of an entire genre of music up there. Marshall Jefferson, Daryl Pandy, Kevin Irving, Frankie Knuckles.

Some cracking gigs here chaps, thanks for sharing.

As a bit of an explanation why my gigs were so memorable:
Madness - they were absolutely on top of their game that night. Loads of energy. Fantastic stuff
Oasis - In that one night they took on America and won. Liam Gallagher was a Rock god that night and had the crowd eating out his hands
The Smiths - more the atmosphere than the gig itself. There’d been loads of trouble at their gigs previously and the everything was really tense. The Smiths seemed to thrive on this on played a blinding set
Kasabian - Simply blew the roof off the place
Motörhead - Was their 20th anniversary gig. A proper party, loads of shenanigans going on, Lemmy drinking bottles of neat JD throughout the gig and an appearance by Phil Lynott. Still the loudest gig I’ve ever attended.

I had a propensity for seeing live artists before they became famous.

1965: Rod Stewart and the Soul Agents at the Troutbeck pub in Ilkley.

1968: Joe Cocker's Greaseband at High Melton College.

However, the best live music I ever experienced was the American Blues concert at Sheffield City Hall in 1965. The artists performing there included Sonny Boy Williamson, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, amongst many others.

It was black blues music at it's very best.

I have been to many a gig but I was incredibly fortunate to get tickets to Live 8 @ Hyde Park and saw some incredible music...I think I was perhaps a bit young at the time to appreciate some of the bands that played that day including Pink Floyd, but it was an unforgettable day.

For those still interested in live music, the village hall out at Wroot has an evening a few times a month called 'Wroot Rocks' and they have had some unbelievable acts down there over the last few months, come might not be particularly recognisable names to most (Will Varley, Ben Ottewell, Gaz Brookfield, The Leylines) but the standard of music I have seen in such a small venue has been fantastic....I would fully recommend going...

Yeah similarly so was Dolly Parton at the Dominion Theatre London in 1983

Slade - Grimsby Central Hall 1982 (how can you not enjoy Slade for your first ever gig)
Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan - Reading Festival 1983 (memorable for all the wrong reasons) - but was also the occasion of Thin Lizzy's last ever English gig
Nostell Priory 1984 - The Damned, The Band, Van Morrison, Pretenders, Marillion among others but I remember it most of all for the police driving in to close it down and raid it just as I was driving out in the works van
Camel - Harrogate Royal Centre 1984, my favourite ever gig, if you like that sort of thing
Roy Harper - Sheffield Octagon c1991 (i had some 'banter' with Roy, Crowle Rover can tell you about it, seen him a couple of times since so he clearly doesn't hold it against me)
Grateful Dead - Wembley Arena 1990, Bruce Hornsby on keyboards, fire-eaters and stilt walkers everywhere, bonkers
