Not even on the bench. Anderson, Crawford & May in for Butler, Whiteman & Coppinger. Bench of Jones, Butler, Sadlier, Whiteman, Beestin, Smith, Lewis.

If everyone has to earn their place and all are equal then think most folk would agree that after Sunderland he lost his claim for this game. To not be on bench suggests something else though. Maybe a knock.

If he argued about getting hooked at Sunderland he hasn't got a leg to stand on as he was abysmal..but not to make the bench he's probably injured..

He might be being rested for a supposedly harder game on Saturday.

Does this sound like he’s been dropped rather than rested

What exactly does relying on a player that's quality at the level you're at sum up?

Having him in the side makes us better, doesn’t mean we’re relying on him

Maybe,he just does'nt want to admit in public he made a mistake resting him.

What's his age got to do with it? Does it matter when he's as good as he is?

Players do have private lives aswell.

GM: "James Coppinger has been rested. It's something I don't want to disclose in public

If there are personal reasons, wouldn't it be better to say just that? It could be personal reasons but that could also be read as a bust-up.

He...did say that? Personal reasons that aren't something the manager feels should be divulged in public suggest to me that Copps has something completely unrelated to football going on. Which is understandable because that happens to literally all of us, things crop up that take us away from our jobs for a period sometimes.

You say  "he didn't play because of a personal issue which I don't want to discuss." The way it was said could be personal reasons or it could be something in the dressing room.

I suppose we'll have more idea on Saturday, although I'd expect the local media to ask on Thursday whether he's available for selection on Saturday.

Does no one remember speculating when Billy Sharp was left out? And the news that shortly followed?

If Grant is saying personal reasons then that’s good enough for me.

He didn't say that though, did he? He said he had been rested and it was something he didn't want to disclose.

Exactly that.  Particularly when people have families etc.  Anything could be the reason that may have impacted Friday's performance and not appearing last night.  Equally it could be something more but if Mccann says it's not to be public that's enough for me.

You're reading too much into it, Red Baron. Mush makes a great point on Sharp, there was lots of speculation on here about transfers and things when he suddenly wasn't in the team and it turned out to be something far more important than football keeping him out.

Grant did say something along the lines of he should be available for Saturday when asked on Dee Dah after the match.

I've now read what it says in the Free Press and that clears it up.
