Best player
« on October 10, 2019, 05:55:54 pm by roversdude »
My little un has just asked me who the best player I’ve ever seen is overall
Followed by best player I’ve ever seen play for us, I was trying to think of one of the loanees we had from West Ham but I’m having a memory blank.
Love to hear others views

Only us old 'uns can remember, but when we talk about Alick Jeffrey and Harry Gregg, we're talking world class.

Well, roversdude, I'm one of the few on here lucky enough to have enjoyed King Alick and Copps.  i love reading others recount their tales of Alick, I didn't see him for long enough unfortunately, I did see one of his infamous hatricks though and man, did he have a shot on him.
And whilst I don't doubt that had he not had the misfortune of his broken leg he would have risen higher than Copps has managed I can't help but say the skills I've been fortunate to watch Copps display makes him the best I have seen.  And, yes I watched Diuff but never got the thrill I get watching Copps.

Best overall in the flesh - cantona, Gascoigne and (gk bias) Peter schmeichel. Tho maldini, Zola and (here's the gk bias part 2) toldo (lucky enough to be around the Italy national squad based at our uni for euro 96) come close. Best for rovers - loved stock, Brevett, copps and (gk bias again) sulli.

My favourite player will always be Peter Kitchen as I started watching Rovers in the early 70's but he best player is Ian Snodin.

Best in a Rovers shirt got to be Copps , having performed consistently for years and still turning in the performances that he does now , that man is a legend . Best ive seen play is  Kevin De Bruyne . His passing and vision is out of this world

Gascoigne for the Rovers definitely!

Non-Rovers - Paolo di Canio when he was at Wednesday - things he could do with a ball was amazing

Kieran Brady, what a player he was.
That testimonial gazza played for Rovers in 89, he was a magician, a proper street footballer who played for fun.
Ronaldinho is one of the best I've ever seen.

Eddie Gormley was a bit Gazza esq if memory serves me right.

Alick for Rovers, Johnny Giles must be close though, very few midfielders had his ability for defence cutting passes.

Context- Division 4 Peter Kitchen, Conference desperate times - Steve Nicholl, back in the league MacIndoe, and of course Copps  for many a year. In between Mike Jeffrey, Colin Cramb, and possibly one of the best goals I was privilidged to watch, Darren Uttley's half way line Cardiff away....just so many memories...

At one point in time billy Bremner was one of the best players in Europe. By the time I saw him in a Rovers shirt he was past his best obviously.

I saw most of the first division players around 1988-1990 including the likes of John Barnes etc..

There are probably some outstanding players I have seen who I don’t remember seeing..

For Rovers I would say it’s between Copps and Young Snod..

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned El Hadj Diouf, even in passing. The lay-off he gave Billy Sharp for that goal was superb, and he was probably the only one of the 'experiment' who was a success.

For what it’s worth after much thought my answer was Gazza overall. For Rovers I had to just throw a few in the mix Kitch, Ian Snodin, Steve Nicholl, McIndoe, Billy Sharpe and of course Copps

Ha ha

Was reading this thread and got right to the bottom thinking nobody has mentioned Tony Woodcock and then bang there he was. Probably still best loan Player we ever had - went on to get 42 England Caps (I think)

Like to see Herbie get that many cos he was awesome as well

Best player I've seen in a Rovers shirt - Alick Jeffrey. Best player I've seen "represent" Rovers - George Best in John Nicholson's testimonial. Both just sublime talents.

For me the best DRFC player is Coppinger, although as above i’d give special mention to Steve Nicol, who was playing in a different dimension even though his legs had gone.

Best player, Gazza, totally amazing.
