I watched on TV it was 4231 all game.

John played LB
James played Left of the front three. It was obvious there’s no need to apologise to me.

We don't agree that often if ever Steve but you are correct it was 4-3-3, thats a fact.
Still disagreeing it was 4231

                 Dieng
Halliday Wright Anderson John
        Sheaf.      Whiteman
Taylor.       Gomes.       James
                 Ennis.

Ahh I misread that thread then.

Well your wrong, I can tell you for a fact that they set up as 4-3-3

Just got back and we played our usual formation.
James played in Sadlier position and John played left back with Gomes in Copps position.
So it was a fairly fluid 4-2-3-1 formation.

Just a word for Ben Sheaf tonight as he played a very mature game.
Quite outstanding & his best game by a mile in a Rovers shirt.
As good as Anderson was which was very good, Sheaf was my m.o.m.
Very solid performance from everyone. We completely ran the 1st half and in the second defended quite brilliantly when Sunderland stepped their game up.
More than deserved a point from that display and very proud to be a Rover tonight.

A very accurate post Campsall.

I would say that is the best I’ve seen from Gomes so far, and Sheaf looked back to his best.

Would agree, we said Sheaf too.  He is a player improving rapidly now in that position.

Theres huge potential here, we all know what's preventing it.

Wouldn’t agree there. Usually 2 sitting in front of the back four (normally the two Bens) then a 3 behind a lone striker.

Proud of the lads tonight. An excellent, well-deserved point.
At last - we put in a performance against Sunderland!
Dieng was superb, so assured.
Anderson is a hero.
Gomes - his best game for us, he was everywhere in the first half.

Someone on Sunderland’s site is saying Sheaf is the best player he’s seen in this division.

I thought the teamwork was good with the right amount of niggle and harrying, we soaked up their attacks and we had a bit of luck. I'd imagine they will be thinking they had a bit of an off game but they couldn't deliver the final blow.

I missed the last 15min

Personally I thought it was a fluid 433. Notwithstanding the fact that a formation is essentially just something you stand in at kick off time. It’s more about the structure isn’t it?

I agree it was quite fluid and theres a lot of positives to take.  Defence superb, passed it well just the one weakness we all know of. Sort that and Darren moore is the man to get us up the top.  Huge week ahead.

Sheaf was excellent, amazing to see such vast improvement, says a lot about his attitude and the coaches we have.

One of our gutsiest displays away this season against a team full of confidence, and us needing to get something from the game to get a bit of confidence back when we play the top sides in the division.
Sheaf and Gomes had their best games for us this season up to press, and with Whiteman quietly getting on with things, and James surprisingly shoved into midfield, but doing well, we looked solid and combative.
The back four were solid behind them( are there really two better central defenders in this division) again getting a shut out.
Ennis and Taylor worked hard tackling back, both missing decent chances, the lack of scoring goals and penetration well documented, but nobody can point the finger about Lack of effort.
The management team really are tactically a step up from what we have had since SOD, proactive and meticulous in their approach to combating the other teams tactics, and the players keep their shape now lots better than at the start of the season, definitely progress being made, we need them to stay for the long haul.
One of those games, if you don't win, don't lose, which we didn't and got the point we deserved from the game, a well done from me.

This is from a Sunderland goal kick heading down to our left.

We clear as day played 4-2-3-1 like we have done all season.

I was away over the weekend so only got round to watching the game yesterday. Excellent performance 1st half as has  been said,  solid defence 2nd half. I haven't seen itmentioned anywhere hut did anyone else think that Power should have had a red for the tackle with Taylor just before half time? His right foot came right through on Taylor with no attempt to play the ball

Watching on tellybox Taylor looks tohave pulled out of the tackle before Power whacks him, showed the incident from a couple of angles and one looks far worse than the other

Genuinely worrying about the “fans” on here thinking our usual formation is a 4-3-3. Especially when they constantly profess knowledge and put down all contributors with differing opinions.

May be that some of our “knowledgeable” posters on here aren’t actually attending matches quite as regularly as they make out...

It was defo 4-2-3-1, and I though Reece played well further forward.

No it wasn’t.
