Interesting to see that the Labour Party isn’t yet calling for Cummings to go - they are wanting the PM to answer the important questions..

Basically lots of ducking and diving, Ridge had him for breakfast, he tried desperately to change the subject to the Roads but Ridge was not letting him off the hook

There seems to be a few Tories breaking ranks today and finding something resembling a back bone

“We’ve never told people where to locate themselves.”

The problem for Shapps is that he was trying to defend the indefensible. I think even he knows it. The cabinet ministers are under orders, if it wasn’t a matter of such obvious moral disrespect and public health consequence then you could almost begrudgingly admire him for ‘fronting up.’

The Prime Minister is certainly conspicuous by his absence, but then it is a bank holiday weekend and he probably wants some time off after working on Wednesday.

Well it's blindingly obvious that the stories about the second trip and the Barnard Castle visit are broadly true.

If they weren't, "Sources close to Dominic Cummings" would be rebutting them a lot more aggressively than saying they are "inaccurate". "Sources close to Dominic Cummings" use words like that very, very carefully and specifically. They will mean that some specific detail is incorrect. But they wouldn't use a nuanced word like that if the general thrust was wrong.

I think this changes the game. He's in big, big trouble.

I wonder which Tory MP will be the first to cross the floor when Parliament resumes.?

There will be several for whom their MP salary isn’t critical and therefore who can risk losing their constituency seat next time around.

Not necessarily defecting to Labour, but just away from the government - publicly.

Absolutely lost the plot.

Or maybe you, me and the rest of the country must have imagined the stay at home message that’s been pushed daily for the past two months. Easy mistake to make.

Shapps didn't deny that Cummings made a 60 mile round trip on 12 April but says this was outside quarantine period.

No indication of what made this trip 'essential' yet though.

I don't think anyone will cross the floor. It looks to me that Cummings has pissed off a lot of Tories in the past and now that he's handed them a reason on a plate they'll do everything they can to get their revenge.

If only someone would ask Shapps, as Transport Secretary, to release the CCTV proof of Cummings' movements to prove his whereabouts at any given time and back up what Cummings is saying and blow all the critics out of the water in one fell swoop...

If Cummings wasn't so dangerous to the health of the country on a number of levels I'd say keep him on .

He'd be the classic Hitler example , more worth in keeping him alive and taking the Third Reich down from the inside .

However we have to live with this lot for at least another four years and this loose cannon is capable of anything .

"We will not waste our time answering a stream of false allegations about Mr Cummings from campaigning newspapers," Number 10 said in a statement.

Anybody remember Black Wednesday?

1992. John Major had just won a shock victory which knocked the stuffing out of the Labour party.

The Tories were flying high and controlling the agenda.

Then a shock came from out of nowhere. A massive attack on the Pound by the money markets. The value of the Pound was collapsing by the hour.

You remember?

But do you remember what the Govt did?

It didn't do the obvious, sensible thing, which was to realise this was an unwinnable battle.

It went all in on saving the value of the Pound.

Lamont as Chancellor spent huge amounts of our foreign reserves trying to shore up the pound. And eventually he had to face the inevitable. He couldn't win. He'd spent the money in vain. He lost anyway.

The Tory Govt's credibility collapsed as a result. They were a busted flush. They dropped 5, 10, then 25% behind a resurgent Labour. And didn't recover for 15 years.

The Cummings Scandal is beginning to feel a lot like that. This is looking like a battle the Govt cannot win. And it is making a big mistake in fighting it. Spending, not money, but political capital. Just as Black Weds came to define the incompetence of the Major Govt, this could be the defining moment for Johnson, if he becomes labelled, not as a man of the people, but as a supporter of the elite's right to do what the f**k they want, while the rest of us are expected to do what they tell us.

That is the Attorney General. Telling us it is OK to break the law if you're doing it for the kids.

I mean it is to be fair but that's not the point is it?

I don't have necessarily a huge issue with him travelling as he has, lots of people have and he should be treated as they all are.

I have a big issue in trying to cover it up though, it sums his approach up.

BFYP

The Govt said then and says now that if you have CV-19 you MUST stay at home.

But you don't have any problems with the PM's chief adviser deciding that didn't apply to him?

Don't you see the problem inherent in that, if the message now becomes "Use lockdown rules as a general guide and make your own minds up"?

ITV’s Robert Peston says ministers have told him Cummings’ resignation or sacking is only “only a matter of time”.
