Crazy car regulations
« on January 28, 2020, 09:04:39 am by Axholme Lion »
I have just bought a new Suzuki Jimny. I haven’t even taken delivery of it yet and have found out that the model has been withdrawn from sale in Europe due to the draconian new EU emissions rules, despite the fact that the vehicle is only 1.5 litre and has only been for sale here for just over 18 months. Apparently the only way around this is for Suzuki to reintroduce the model next year with the rear seats removed and class it as a commercial vehicle as CV emissions regulations are not as strict. What a joke.

It's a small 1.5 litre petrol engine car. It's hardly a Range Rover. Suzuki make affordable cars for the masses, maybe they should start on the companies building gas guzzlers?

A few months ago those Jimnys were selling on the used market for premiums over and above list price given they had an 18 month waiting list. Great little motor and presumably this wont affect your taking delivery of one in the spec you ordered? Just enjoy it or alternatively just flip it on for a tidy profit if the waiting list is still that long.

It's sat there at the dealer where my Mrs works waiting to be accessoried up. You're right that they're getting sold on for about four or five grand more than the list price but I intend to keep mine till it dies. I had the old shape before and I have been waiting since June for this one!

Engine size on its own is no indication of emission performance.

That is true, however a massive Range Rover will definitely pump out more than a Suzuki. The manufacturers get fined per unit dependant upon how far over the grammes of co2 per unit allowance they go. The rules have just got far stricter so if they sell these cars a huge surcharge will be added to the price. Now this is all well and good if you are selling cars which sell at 80 grand because what's another couple of grand on the price, however another two or three grand on the price of a twenty grand motor makes a huge difference.

I think that is the idea for it to come back in a year or so with a different engine. It's not actually that much of a polluter it's just the new rules that have come in are really strict. I reckon in a couple of years or so you will be lucky to be able to buy a petrol car because all the manufacturers are dropping a lot of models as we speak.

The main issue is that they don't make enough cars to spread the average co2 emissions or are unwilling to buy the credits off manufacturers that are under the co2 level

They're not such a big company as far as the European market is concerned. Buying credits is a bit of con as the cars still pump co2 out credits or not.

Totally true and I don't think the credits should exist and every manufacturer should be less than say 50gm/co2 on average.

Foxbat, you would love my GMC 3.6 V6 Arcadia then. If you moan about the Jimney.

AxHolme, I didn't realise I was criticising the Germans, I thought I was telling the truth, perhaps some of the EU love in supporters would like to tell me the errors of my ways.
After all they all have spouted about our PM being a serial liar. But not much about German multi national companies on the hey diddle diddle.
