Music Doncaster have run out to
« on February 11, 2020, 01:11:03 pm by joeheadland »
Good afternoon everyone,

I hope this is okay to post here – if not, moderators please move or delete as appropriate.

I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris
Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine
articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and
replica shirts (see, for example sportingstatues.com, and
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17460263.2019.1578255).
Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have
run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years.

We are looking for the music that Doncaster Rovers have run out to, for as
many seasons in the past as you can recall. We are simply interested in
the title of the song, the artist who recorded it, and for which seasons
Doncaster Rovers ran out to this. Any help you can give us to
piece together the different songs that your club has run out to would
be hugely appreciated.

If you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs
being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic.

I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song
that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the
tannoy system as the players enter the field.

If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any
questions, please let us know!  We would be very happy to discuss the
project.

Thanks for your time guys,

Joe Headland

What do we currently run out to? It's an instrumental version of something and it sounds so familiar. It's been doing my head in for the last few years as to what it is or what it reminds me of!

Think it's more prominent when coming out for the second half.

On topic - Didn't we used to run out to The Boys are Back in Town in the early to mid 2000s at Belle Vue?

We currently come out to Wild Rover by the Dubliners and have for a few years. Club Foot - Kasabian was it for a while then O Fortuna and Andy Williams - The Impossible Dream before that, which covers most of the time at the Keepmoat.

A few years back John Parr recorded RTID, which when it came over the Keepmoat PA sounded like “Auntie Ivy, Auntie Ivy.”

John Parr didn't record the Auntie Ivy song, he did a different song called Out Of The Darkness.

Didn't Rotherham used to come out to that song by Ivor Biggun and the red nosed burglars?

The last line of  O Fortunate is very apt for some of our posters.

Aye it's been Wild Rover for a few seasons now, works really well I feel.

We briefly used The Impossible Dream but many didn't like it as it was a bit slow and didn't drum up much enthusiasm around the ground.

I think we did use The Boys Are Back In Town at Belle Vue in the mid-2000s, would make sense as it referred to us getting back into the Football League.

Not sure those Rovers-specific songs lasted long. Can't remember us ever coming out to the John Parr one although he did perform it at the ground once, and that "RTID" one may have if only for a brief time.

I always fancied us running out to Smells like teen spirit.
Some could even adapt the lyrics to,
"Here we are now, Gerrit forward".

We had Ten Pole Tudor, Swords of a Thousand Men for a bit not long after moving to the KM.

Not that the OP cares but I'm a big fan of the Wild Rover and it's been used for quite some time now so it's becoming part of the routine.

Aye, the RTID was recorded by some fans wasn’t it rather than professionals? Certainly didn’t sound professional anyway!

Think this is the version played at the Keepmoat, by the Dropkick Murphys

The Prodigy - Firestarter
Robbie Williams - Let Me Entertain You (cringe)

Are the 2 I remember most vividly.

No you’re spot on. After the initial verse we felt that getting back to the chorus took a bit too long so it’s an edited version. And it’s definitely Dropkick Murphy’s.

Immediately before this we tried Molly Molone by the same band but again it’s just too slow.

I don't remember that one myself, but I wouldn't be surprised as it's been used a lot by various football & other sports teams.

No I remember that

It was the year we won Division 3. The players’ choice I believe.

A few highlights from the pre match playlists:

I’ve got a brand new combine harvester vs Yeovil at home

Viva España vs Real Sociedad in a pre season friendly at Belle Vue. Possibly the biggest offence we could cause to our Basque opponents.

Centrefold by the J Geils Band. A popular stand classic.

The version of Kashmir we hear is actually a Kashmir sampled song from Puff Daddy and was first heard at Stoke in the conference play off final

Hi everyone,

My apologies for bumping this up the thread. Thank you for all your responses - it's a niche area! We're trying to build a mini-timeline or history of the tracks Doncaster have used, and this is what I've gathered so far.

1   The Lightning Seeds              Sugar Coated Iceburg         1996         1996           1997
2   Puff Daddy ft Jimmy Page      Come with Me                         1998         2002/03   ??
3   Harry J All Stars                      The Liquidator                 1969         2002/03   2003/04
4   Thin Lizzy                             The Boys are Back in Town    1976         2003/04   2004/05
5   Tenpole Tudor                      Swords of a thousand men    1981         2007      ??
6   Andy Williams                      The Impossible Dream          1971         2007           ??
7   Carl Orff                              O Fortuna                         1935              2007           ??
8   Kasabian                               Club Foot                         2004              2007           ??
9   The Dubliners                      Wild Rover                         1964         2007      2020
10   Dropkick Murphys               Wild Rover                         2001         2007           2020

Anything anyone agrees or disagrees with, please us know! If you can remember roughly what season a track was played in as well, that's really helpful.

Once again, thank you for sharing,

Cheers,
Joe

I stand very much to be corrected on this one - but somehow recall in the "old days" (late 60's???) at Belle Vue - night matches - they ran out to a version of "Tonight" - as in West Side Story? or am I just making this up? Does anyone else remember it?

They came out to John Parr's 'Out Of The Darkness' in the early Keepmoat days.
