Thornton has the record because he came into the Sunderland team during the worst season a team had ever had in the Premier League up to that point. I think only Derby have beaten it since. They lost nigh on every week.

I presume this record refers to a player from the start of their PL career, as the overall worst season for an individual record belongs to Jack Grealish, who beat Thornton by enduring defeat in all 16 of his appearances the year Villa went down from the top flight in 2016.
