My organisation has just (last night) advised all employees to work from home. Luckily, I am in a profession where I can do that quite easily.

Wondering about other jobs/professions on here... can you work from home or is it impossible?

I have a work mobile, and a laptop. My own broadband is unlimited so I don’t need to worry about email capacity with attachments etc, and I also have the space to work at home.

We're having a trial day 1 day next week. Got a laptop & phone to re-route calls to, so shouldn't be too bad.

Feel quite lucky. It's others i'm concerned for.

Problem is, lots of industry sectors will face uncertainties so actually doing business is already proving difficult.:

This is the UK workforce by industry. A massive hit to the real economy would be if we got to the stage of closing non-essential shops like Italy. A lot of the technical and administrative jobs can seeminlgy be done from home.

In my job I do both sides of the job, obviously driving where you can’t work from home, but when I do the base I always work from home, we have a voip virtual office through yay.com, everything a large company switchboard can do yay.com can do it, even internal calls.

I’m really lucky as I was made redundant 3 weeks ago after nearly 19 years, and the turd that took over the company just before Xmas hasn’t bothered with sorting out mine or my ex work mates redundancy money, he’s waiting for investment and a CVA to be put in place. So I’m “not working from home”

We are a totally internet based business - and they won't let us work from home! Which I would guess is down to the directors not trusting us to do our set hours if we are out of their sight.

Saying that we did have an email on Wednesday saying they were looking at home working if it should become necessary. Sort of the Boris Johnson approach, we wont do anything until we absolutely have too, by which time it will be too late to do it properly.

Daughters workplace was instructed to take laptops home every night earlier this week this just assumed that staff have suitable internet connection at home, she doesn't work on a Friday but received a text this morning saying staff are to work from home until further notice. City Council.Judging from the lack of output some put in when in the office she has no doubts that quite a few will give zero output when "working" from home

Our company has gone 50% home working for next two weeks. Not my area as we have audit on site.  I am taking my laptop home as normal so minimal effect for me.  I have more concern on the potential cashflow impact as we arent a huge business and in building services could suffer if buildings close.

My office virtually shut down today, and is officially shutting from Wednesday. We’re a tech company and emphasise flexible working, and probably 25% are remote anyway, but I still think it will take most people a lot of getting used to. I had to get my monitor and office chair home which wasn’t easy but if I’m going to be stuck at home for weeks (months?!) I’ll be a lot more comfortable with them here.

Shopping deliveries appear to now be the 5th emergency service. It's like Christmas but with no end in sight. Delivery slots are full up to a week in advance and that's before any drivers come down with it.

At least you are spending a lot of time in the open air, which is healthy. I heard a doctor on the radio last night saying it is unlikely the virus can survive for very long on parcels and letters.

So the best advice is just wash your hands a lot and keep wiping down the van with antibacterial products.

I work in sales so am home based anyway but we’ve been told to limit customer meetings to only urgent ones and stay home.

It does feel strange today though, phone is very quiet.

I'm WFH today, with the window open overlooking the centre of Sheffield. It's usually full of the noise of traffic and shouting and building sites. Eerily quiet today.

I've just had a couple of minutes looking at the traffic on the main road from Walkley to the city centre. There's not 10% of the number of cars I'd expect to see on a Monday afternoon.

I work in the design industry and use high powered rigs, the firm doesn't want to pay pricey VPN licenses, so have bought cheap ass chrome cast type screen mirror imaging dongle to go with some.nasty no name monitors. Only problem aside from awful scaling issues is the keyboard barely works, everything has to be done via the pull down menus!!!   Complete nitemare!!!

True fact, I once got a lift in the back of a post van so I wouldn’t miss the away bus to Bradford, totally illegal I know, but the postman was also the organiser of the away bus !!!

I will be working from home as of 2moro....we are using some software called Smartmove which give us access to all of our servers.... Don't fully understand how it works but from testing it, it seems seamless...
