Second day in a row for me, big respect to people who manage it all the time as I really struggle to maintain motivation beyond mid-afternoon. Today at about half two I spent a good half hour videoing clips of a guy on First Dates who has a vague resemblance to a friend of mine, then another hour and a half reordering and splicing them together into a highlights clip. I managed to answer two emails at the same time so no flies on me.

Still not been given the go ahead by directors at our place yet, only half the office have done so, determined by departments but not mine. Surely wont be long though.

Starting work from home tomorrow. I'm told the Ford plant in Dagenham is planning to close for 2 weeks beginning of April. Think they are being a tad optimistic

I’m in a public service. All I can say is it’s been a bloody nightmare so far and it’s not even got going yet. How our services will even begin to manage all this I don’t know. Logistics of public services obviously mean it’s nigh on impossible to run these from home.

It’s highly likely all of us in these services are basically going to get ill.

I'm on 14 day isolation as a member of  my household has a temperature and a cough. I'm not permitted to return to work without signing a document confirming that I have been symptom free for 14 days yet I'll be paid for only 7 days. I'll take it on the chin as I know some folk will be in a worse position but I've already got colleagues saying they simply won't isolate.

If he’s been symptom free for 14 days he is no more likely to pass on the virus than any of us..

Problem is, as 5mins says, the companies are throwing the burden onto the workers. That's really not acceptable when the Govt is making it clear that it is going to support companies to get through this.

I feel quite lucky to work for a company which can still trade through this pandemic.  We will lose revenue without a doubt, but we have been assured the company has enough cash to survive.

I have every sympathy for folks who don’t have the same level of job security.  Living with the situation is bad enough but much tougher with real income problems.

I can only do my job at my place of work. My skin is like paper with the amount of sanitizer I have used. I can't believe it but the idiot I work with doesn't use it. On the up side at least it's been an easy commute.

HA HA. My Mrs is borderline OCD so we had a cupboard full of the stuff before all this kicked off. Unfortunately we moved house last Thursday and didn't have a fridge or freezer until last Friday teatime so we have hardly any food due to the selfish panic buying morons. She keeps asking what shall we do if there's no food, so I told her we'll eat porridge and drink water. There's nothing else to do but keep smiling. There's worse things happen at sea.

You could always do a trade, one hand sanitiser has to be worth two or three loaves of bread.

The firm I work for have told us we will not be paid for any absence, but if we feel ill we must go home! I'll bet the management will be getting paid.

Are you in a union? Your firm is bullshitting you. They can get a grant from Govt which would easily cover immediate sick pay costs.

No. They don't want to take on a loan because of the interest payments! They're creating a proper time bomb with the future attitude of the staff when this all gets sorted.

The interest payments will be next to nothing.
The BoE base rate has been lowered yet again.

Have to agree with this. At my work they have allowed many but not all to work from home. Those at work arent all that comfortable about it and it isnt a good long term move.

I’m working from home because I have been told to, but to be honest I would be happy to work in the office albeit taking precautions..

Everyone who can has been working from home since Wednesday - three people who don't have the facilities are trying to do a bit of social distancing in the office.

I have heard on the rumour mill that someone who was in last week but off on Monday has a partner who is showing symptoms so we might soon see if we shut down early enough.

I said a GRANT, not a loan.

I agree, the loan scheme that the Chancellor announced is batshit. No company is going to take on a loan in these circumstances.

Watch this space though. Apparently the Chancellor has had an earful today from senior MPs from both sides who have a better understanding of the situation. They've told him to get his finger out and mimic what several other EU countries are doing - effectively charge companies negative income tax - pay companies to keep employees on.

In Denmark, the Govt is paying 75% of EVERYONE'S wages at the moment. That's coming here rapidly. Maybe as early as tomorrow.

Sweet f**king Jesus!

Just look at new unemployment claims in the USA.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/03/19/upshot/coronavirus-jobless-claims-states.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage

Gone from historically low to historically high levels in one week. In a normal recession, it takes a year for that sort of change in unemployment to happen. And that new level only adds up 15/50 states! There's 35 states still to add data.

And THAT is why Govts everywhere must IMMEDIATELY underwrite salaries. If they don't, this is going to be the worst economic catastrophe since...well, effectively, ever.

I heard somewhere that they were considering some sort of universal income for all adults, an idea which as far as I know was first suggested by John Hargreaves of the Kibbo Kift in the 1930s. sounds like a good idea to me but I can't see it washing with the Conservatives, however we are in strange times.
PS: has anyone seen any UHT milk anywhere?
