School closures and childcare
« on March 18, 2020, 06:24:23 pm by mushRTID »
Sorry for another thread but I thought others may be in the same boat as me.

Both myself and the little ones mum work full time, child is 2 and goes nursery 3 days a week.

His grandparents have him 2 days a week.

What on earth do we do when nursery closes on those 3 day’s?

Will it be at the discretion of our companies?

Will government fund us taking a day off a week but staying on full pay?

Will we be asked to take days off unpaid?

I’m pretty worried about this to be honest, no idea what we will do at minute and hopefully work will advise further tomorrow.

I think that will be down to company discretion for the most part, it’s an awful situation but if people are contracted to 35 hours a week and can’t fulfil their hours... Hopefully a lot of companies will take progressive attitudes, initially at least - if you’re managing to do your work then nothing changes wrt pay, even if the work happens at unusual hours (ie when the kids are in bed), or someone else in the team is able to help cover for you etc until it all blows over.

I’ve just seen that Hearts are asking players to take a 50% pay cut - I’d imagine some companies doing similar as well sadly.

We were told by my daughter who lives in the same village that we both in our late 60's should now start self isolating. We usually look after our 2 grandchildren 3 days a week  but with schools closing, for the eldest, they have decided that as they can both work from home her and our son in law will see to the grandchildren and do all our shopping etc. The bad part is we don't get to see the grandchildren or them as I am in the at risk group, asthma.

Get Skype and talk to them over that. It will give both yourselves and them something to look forward to.  It's what we do with our grandchildren who are in Edinburgh and we cant visit as often as we'd like.  Works on PC, Laptop, Tablet and Mobile Phone and best of all, it's free both to install and to use.  :)

We have Skype and facetime but that doesn't let the little ones run in and give you a hug! especially as they only live a 20min walk away

True.  But better than not seeing them at all.

No mate but we’ve cut ties with his great grandparents for now who are in their 80’s.

Work are being good actually, happy to just work at home with him in the background. Not going to be easy but it is what it is.

My daughter's school has been told that they won't be closing due to the large number of vulnerable children there. They might also have to take the children of key workers. They also have to work the Easter fortnight that they should have been closed for.
