Question on the old away kits
« on May 30, 2020, 10:18:18 am by Lincoln Rover »
Anyone got any photos they can share of the old African violet and chocolate kits we wore please?
I seem to recall the chocolate one was very much a one off, can any of our historians advise me please. Thank you.

Im not a historian just old - and I think the Yellow Shirt Brown shorts* outfit lasted only 1 Season and I am thinking 74/75 based on a trip to Darlington where we lost 4-1 and I remember it being very sunny

To my knowledge I cant ever remember seeing colour Photos of either kits.

* Is that what you meant by the Chocolate Kit ?

I remember us being crap and wondering how bleak our future was. We wore the kit at Barnsley won 1-0 Big Bren I think scored. We started improving and never looked back in a way.

As a kid in the 70s I remember getting a book which listed all the (then) English and Scottish football league clubs.  There was a listing for each, with club info such as ground name, capacity, records etc.  I loved that book.  It had a colour schematic of each club’s home kit, and a text description of the away kit.

For Doncaster the home kit was the white shirt with two red hoops and (I think) red shorts.  Our away kit was described as lemon yellow shirt, chocolate brown shorts.

One of my first away games
The only thing i do remember in Ian Miller running down the wing in those rather brown shorts and yellow top
Thought he looked like a bruised banana
But what a player

You're right about wearing the kit at that game. We'd gone on that incredible run after Stan Anderson took over and that game looked easy on paper but the first choice keeper (Graham Brown?) was injured in the week and played a trailist called Miller who had an absolute nightmare and dropped everything that came his way. I still left convinced we'd be pushing from promotion the next season.

I also remember Malcolm Allison and Terry Venables were at the station and were surrounded by Rovers fans looking for autographs. At the time everyone assumed they'd been there to watch Terry Curran.

Having said all I that I can't remember if the brown and yellow kit survived another season.

I don’t think that particular kit survived into the next season
I’m trying to recall the away kit that replaced it

Here's a black and white photo of the Violet kit being worn at Liverpool in the FA Cup.

Note the black collar and white number on the front of the shirt where the badge would ordinarily go

First away game I went to was at Rotherham in the Sheffield County cup. I’m going to say either 76 or 77.
Played in yellow/brown that night.

I remember in the ill fated 66/67 we played Swansea away and lost 6-0 in a pinky red shirt with a thin white pin stripe. I never saw that kit again.
As we and Swansea both played in white I wondered if we had forgotton to take a change strip and had to borrow one.

... and photo of "the" day at Anfield a 2-2 Draw so can date that one to Jan 74

That also adds a bit of creedence to my Darlo post earlier that the Yellow and Brown kit followed that in the 74/5 Season but I cant convince myself that I remember it being really sunny (or we were not in African Violet kit)
I'd had a few and we stayed behind to empathise with the Players as they left the Ground having lost 4-1 and when we had the Yellow Brown kit I remember Darlo being really sunny
Wheres that historian gone lol

The 'African Violet' kit was worn in 1973-74

The yellow and brown kit was worn in 1975.

According to the very accurate Chris Worrall

His kits are right (my memory DOES WORK) but the colours are not as accurate as they could be

The African Violet kit was THE most macho kit you could ever imagine. Even I would have looked muscular in it but it was really African Violet as in the Plant Saintpaulia where I guess the colour comes from. Here is one and I would say the kit was the same colour as the outer edges of the flower in the bottom right corner wheres in the Historic kits the shirt is nearly blue

Whereas the Yellow and Chocolate kit was - well lemon yellow very bright - and much brighter than shown on the Link

I looked back at older posts and found I posted this on Aug 5th 2010. Will I ever learn

Yes the African Violet kit was epic

The Yellow Shirt and Chocolate Shorts kit was brilliant and I remember to this day what a dick I felt at Darlo where I had matching Brown Jeans and a brown shirt with Yellow V Necked jumper - this is the days before Replica shirts of course. It was the best I could do and (at the time) FELT like a good idea

Personally and this will be at odds with everyone else my all time favourite shirt is YET ANOTHER away shirt - the Blue and White Hooped number - brilliant. I will wear it till I die !!!

I'd like to see a colour photo of the 1978? sky blue with navy shorts Umbro kit. Basically Man City but with dark blue shorts.

I got this as a birthday gift from Ray Harrison's, Bradford Row/E Laith Gate. I was amazed we now had those fancy diamonds down the sleeve just like the big teams in Shoot!. When I outgrew it I just binned it but I always wish I'd kept it.

Chris no longer goes to games, but is still a wealth of football knowledge. I am friends with him on Facebook, he has a young daughter who is now his focus. Top guy is Chris.
