They should never have been used in Northern Ireland,they should have stuck with County Regiments. Their training and ethos of the unit has never had anything to do with turning the other cheek and handling people with kid gloves.

The 'ordinary' troops saw themselves as there to protect the minority Catholic community, and the Catholic community responded well to them because of that. The Paras - because of the IRA - saw ALL Catholics as the 'enemy' and treated the general Catholic community as such and damaged the Catholic/army relationship forever, with disastrous results. Not only for the soldiers posted there in future, but also acting as a fantastic recruiting call for the terrorist organisations.
A more fundamental question should be 'why is an unelected bureaucrat with zero military experience or knowledge making these decisions?'
