Also what Is DM supposed to do if he thinks Lawlor is not good enough ( and he isn’t imo ) and he must not have thought Jones was ready to be no 1
So I think DM’s hand was somewhat forced.

This is not so much about what DM thinks about Jones, it’s more about having to rely on a very inexperienced and totally untried u18 keeper as back-up, which is a non-starter in my view.

The manager wanted a third keeper (experienced) in the summer and went on record to say so. We obviously didn’t get one, for whatever reason, so we’re stuck with the circumstances. It’s hardly our fault that Stoke got 2 keepers injured at the same time!

There is definitely an argument that we should have our own No1, but I don’t consider Jones being that person.

Signing any player on loan could put you in a position where they may be recalled and leave you short. Playing Devil’s advocate a bit but at least with a goalkeeper if this does happen you can sign an emergency replacement - you can’t do that with any other position.

Slightly different with outfield players though as they can only be recalled during transfer windows.

I'd have recalled Lawlor for the bench, anything that pisses off Oldham fans is a winner.

Then we'd have to pay his salary.

And with a salary cap in place that's the last thing we need.

Does that mean we aren't paying any of Jo Bursik's wages?

Without going into detail, there's a major difference in the costs.

Bursik was always DM's 1st choice keeper during the summer months, which means we didn't miss out on the experienced keeper you mention.

This season is the breakthrough season for Jones, he will play a bigger part than he has done so far.

As Alan said the experienced keeper was talked about by DM along with Bursik and Jones but Covid took over football crowds so it was probably put on the back burner.

Only way Jones can play more is if we sign a keeper on a Short term contract till January or sign a keeper in the January window. I don’t believe we will bring Lawlor back as his wages many cause us a problem.

Check back in the archives, SM, as DM definitely went on record to say he wanted a 3rd keeper and he’d be an experienced guy. Nowhere have I suggested that he would be a No1 keeper.

You shouldn't take DM's words as being totally accurate, he's a football manager and not a media expert. And I don't mean that in a negative way, it's just that he does have a certain way of delivering his interviews.

When I spoke with Gavin, way before the season started, he told me that Bursik was his main choice and that Jones would have a big part to play this season as the club really value the lad. I'm not sure where an experienced keeper would fit into that.
