Josh Sims to QPR: Southampton's transfer stance, Doncaster loan deal, what the player has said
Southampton's Josh Sims has impressed on loan at League One side Doncaster Rovers, but he has now emerged as a potential January transfer target for Queens Park Rangers

The future of Southampton's Josh Sims has been a hot topic in recent seasons.

The 23-year-old midfielder is currently on loan at Doncaster Rovers and is loving his time at the Keepmoat Stadium, where he has scored three times and provided seven assists in 14 appearances for Darren Moore's side.

Sims joined Donny after loan spells with Reading and New York Red Bulls, stints that he hoped would earn him a place in Ralph Hasenhuttl's Southampton plans on the south coast.

That hasn't happened as yet, and now it is being reported that Sims could now be heading for the exit door permanently at Staplewood.

That's because he has now emerged as a potential transfer target for Championship side Queens Park Rangers.

Below, we look at the latest on his future.

QPR interest

According to Football Insider, QPR have set their sights on a permanent move for Sims in the January transfer window.

The report suggests that Sims has been identified as a transfer target for the R's, who currently sit 20th in the Championship, just two points above the relegation zone.

Doncaster loan deal

A complication for QPR is that Sims is currently on loan at Doncaster Rovers, where he has impressed.

He has played 14 times since making the move to the Keepmoat Stadium after finding his opportunities limited at Southampton, where he has made 27 first-team appearances, 13 of which came during his breakthrough 2016-17 season.

The three-month loan deal with Doncaster is set to run until January 16, with no decision made as yet over Sims' future beyond that.

However, it does provide an added complication for any potential suitors, with Sims still eligible to feature for Rovers until the middle of the month, as things stand.

Saints are keeping tabs on Sims' progress, with his current deal with the club set to expire in the summer.

Speaking in November, Hasenhuttl told reporters that he remains deeply invested in what all of his loan players do, including Sims, and has been keeping a close eye on their progress.

It does, however, remain unclear whether Saints would look to extend Sims' stay in Yorkshire or allow for the midfielder to make a permanent switch to Doncaster or elsewhere, rather than potentially lose him for free with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

What Sims has said

The midfielder has previously revealed his desire to sit down with bosses at St. Mary's to discuss the possibility of extending his stay at Doncaster Rovers.

“One hundred per cent I'd be interested in staying,” Sims told the Yorkshire Post.

“I'm playing regular football now – very, very regular football! - and I'm enjoying it.

“I will sit down with Southampton and Doncaster, weigh up my options and see what's best for me when that time comes."

“It's a big few months in my career and something I'm aware of," he continued.

“I think I'm playing well although sometimes I can do better but I've not played regular football for a very long time.

“I think when you're enjoying it you find that little extra in you which spurs you on a little bit.”

Hope he returns to Rovers to take on Ben's role. Permanent move would be nice.

I hope he doesn't, I would want him to play his own role otherwise would be a waste of his blistering pace!

I note the article above appears not to have taken into account his injury. Whether he recovers sufficiently to be considered for anything before the end of January might be tight.

Sims might not be fit before the transfer deadline closes - so perhaps he won't be available (or viable) for sale.... how many clubs are going to buy a player who is injured...?

There may, therefore, be possibility that he may be available for a period on loan again when fit...  Not saying he would come back to DRFC; however, DM got a tune out of him, and he was playing football regularly....

In the latest article we are still interested in Sims and will hope to loan him again but if that fails we will pursue another player.

What are the rules with the loan window? Does that shut at the same time as the transfer window or is it open longer?

I think if we can resign Sims it'll be right at the end of the window, when Southampton give up on the idea of getting a fee for him. Fingers crossed

Liam Hoden basically said the longer he's a Southampton player this January, the more of a possibility it is that he might be back.

OMG!

If the ink’s not dry, that means, at least, they’ve found the pen.

It’s a start!

Yes, but wise to hold off any celebrations until its done and he's confirmed as fit enough to return!

Btw. Seems to be a feature of this forum more recently that we have multiple threads on the same subject. Why do folk start a new thread when one already exists?. I'm not the duplication Police and picking anyone out, but how can you have sensible discussion if there's other threads!

Rant over. Ta.

To me this speaks volumes about Simms as a pro and a person. He obviously has told saints he want to come back to Doncaster to see the job through. There is no way championship clubs have not tried or are interested in taking him on loan. If we go up then I can see him signing for us permanently in the summer.

From Hoden...

It must be said, there’s been a big change in the levels of positivity over Sims. Only a few weeks ago I was told the feeling was Rovers had next to no chance of getting him back. It’s been a lot, lot more positive in the last week or so.

Not the point though Alan, folk should have a look and see if there's already a thread... This about Sims is a long line of duplicate threads recently.

The 'Let's talk about....' threads for example are there for a reason, then someone puts up 'Tonight's Game' or summat similar. Really gets me goat that one!
