Think because of the rightful focus on penalty saves - t  he e Crichton penalty save deserves it own thread - yes it one penalty saved 3 times.

As I recall from 30 years ago, Andy Holmes lunged in and took the guy out - a definite penalty - the pen taker placed the ball on the spot & sent it to Crichton’s right - and it was a top drawer save from the Rovers stopper - however the ref said he moved before the ball was kicked & it was taken again, this time didn’t move and again pulled off another remarkable stop.

As we celebrated the double save in the away end at Spotland, astonishingly the referee saw an infringement and awarded yet another retake - this time the demoralised penalty taker was relieved of his duties and they switched penalty takers - having seen who was now going to take it, Eddie Gormley went to Crichton and told him which way it he would hit it & unbelievably Crichton went the other way and saved it again - by this time even the referee didn’t have the balls to order another retake.

There was definitely a Calendar interview with Crichton afterwards if someone can find it and upload it on here from YouTube.

Can anyone remember the game at Belle Vue when I’m sure he played drunk?! I was only a kid at the time and can’t remember who it was against, but can recall a sequence of unbelievable errors including a shocking miskick that led to a goal. Don’t think he played much after that and Samways got back in.

On another note related to Rochdale, it seemed to be the place for some bizarre games. Do I remember us going there and going in at the break 1-0 up. They had two payers sent off and still came back to win 2-1?

Crichton was generally brilliant how  Samways ever got game time ahead of him at all used to baffle me!

I remember one year at York the game fell on his birthday and he had a blinder- prompting the away end to sing, 'Dennis Dennis 24, Dennis 24' - he played that game with a big smile on his face after that but I think was undone by a rasping Jon Mccarthy half-volley in a 1-1 draw if I recall.

His lad Jack played for me for a while and was also a very good goalkeeper - I believe he is plying his trade in America now coaching and playing on  a uni scholarship or something, as far as I know Paul is out there too - I could be wrong tho, they could be back over here by now but I don't think they are.

If I recall correctly, Rochdale were demolishing or rebuilding the stand to our left that season. 30 years, wow.

Also there that day and seem to remember the stand was being built but no seats fitted . Also seem to remember an altercation in all the melee of the penalty drama with a rovers fan on the pitch remonstrating at the ref??
Also brings back memories of Bruno, Johnny muir and Kev noteman, 3-0 up in the first quarter if I have the right ground

The YouTube footage is from behind a pillar so it’s an obscured view - the footage I want to see is from YTV thh G day interviewed Crichton & he said something along the lines of “I moved for the first one, didn’t move at all for the 2nd and I don’t think the referee dared award another once I saved it again” - I’m sure it was Calendar

Remember the game well as was there. Never seen anything like it before, or since.

Clearly remember a fan or two spilling onto the pitch when the 2nd miss was ordered to be retaken, and I think it was Dougie who had to wrestle several players, and a fan, away from the ref.

‘Cracker’ Crichton was a good keeper back in the day and Ive gotten to know a few Posh fans over the years who all spoke highly of his years with them.

Samways, worst performance was when he was clearly concussed, having been pole axed in the first half against  - I think Halifax, or was it Burnley?
We were three or four up at the time. Second half came, and I couldn't believe my eyes that Samways came out - he looked like a zombie walking out, clearly shaken and pale as a ghost. They unbelievably won the game, I have never forgotten that game.

As an aside in that same team of mine with Jack Crichton was another good player named James Milner - honest, he also played on a Sunday morning with us for The Rum Rooms - often got some funny looks handing over team sheets from refs and oppos when they saw the name James Milner on the sheet. Lol.

He now the assistant manager at Miami FC , not to be confused to David Beckham’s team, the manager is Paul Dalglish ,Kenny’s son. One the playing squad is Paco Craig the son of Mikey Craig the bass player from Culture Club

What a day!
That's when we started the season with 5 straight wins.
I thought that is was going to be our season but no.
Never really replaced Rufus Brevett.
Still in the running for a play off place by March but we rapidly tailed off after that.
