Help needed
« on April 25, 2021, 08:47:21 pm by Logman »
Hi All.

I am contacting you all for some help.
A good friend of mine lost his home and pub to a major fire this weekend. (Ogwell Jolly Sailor)
John Turner is his name and he made his League Debut for Doncaster Rovers on loan from Derby as a goalkeeper in 1974 and made 4 appearances. He told me today that his entire programme collection was destroyed in the fire and that distressed him more than anything else.
I would like to know when and against who he made his debut so that I can try to obtain the programme. I could ask John but that would spoil the surprise.
Also if anybody has any programme containing details of John and willing to donate it to him then please contact me so that I can arrange to pass it on.

Thanks for reading and hopefully your help.

There's a couple of gents (Dutch Uncle & Bristol Red Rover) who post on here who I'm adamant that they'll have this information available at the few clicks of a finger for you.

Apologies in advance if not!

He made his debut at Workington away and saved a first half penalty. We lost 3-1. Next game Chester home we lost 1-2. Next game Reading away
5-0 and in his last game we beat Scunthorpe 1-0 at home. Courtesy of Tony Bluff and Barry Watson Donny the official history.

Hi Longman, just seen this.

Very very sorry to hear of John's terrible experience.

John Turner's 4 games for Rovers were:

10 Feb 1974, Workington Away L1-3
17 Feb 1974, Chester Home, L1-2
24 Feb 1974, Reading Away 0-5
2 March 1974, Scunthorpe Home W1-0

Sounds like the clean sheet in a local derby against Scunthorpe might be his best memory?

Good luck in your very worthy quest. Unfortunately I do not have any of those programmes.

  :scarf: :scarf: :scarf:

Edit: just beaten to it by my friend Idler

I’ve been to the gym and if I had done it after my shower you would have beaten me Dutch.
Interestingly the gate for the Chester game was only about 1,100.
I’m glad that those days have gone. Hopefully for good.

I would imagine disposable income was at a premium at the time, it was played during the miners strike and the three day week.

If you want to obtain the programmes, there are thousands at the Keepmoat in the Supporters Club shop, although obviously at the moment the shop is shut.

It’s opening one evening after the season has ended for supporters to pick up their away programmes. If I remember I’ll have a look for them while I’m there.

How bizarre. Another John Turner hits the Forum and of course I remember him but playing for Reading and Torquay mainly and very vaguely for us

Strange to see he was in Goal v Chester on my Birthday and I think up till this Season Rovers only defeat [at home] ON my Bday

Thank you all for your amazing replies in particular the dates and details of the 4 appearances that John made for DRFC.

The local press in Devon are also on the case and have contacted Johns previous clubs to see if they can help via myself.

Have a great summer and hope you have a great next season and are able to attend games to cheer your team on.

What a small world. I am also friends with Steve Book who is currently the Cheltenham Town goalkeeping coach and the son of Kim.

Logman, I have a programme from the 1973-74 season after John had made his four appearances in the games above.

PM me your address & I'll get it in the post to you if he'd like it.

A decent keeper was Kim.
He was in goal for Northampton when George Best ran riot and scored six in the FA Cup.

I remember it well. Kim was the brother of Man City's Tony Book for those that didn't know.

I have got the Scunthorpe at home and Reading away programmes if you are still looking for them .

Strange printing error in Rovers line up v Reading as number 7 listed as Alan Melly , presumably would have been Alan Murray but in fact Terry Curran played at number 7 !

Wasn't Alan Melly the bloke off the telly ? ( Viz )

Have you been in touch with the club Logman?

It might be worth asking them to put a message out on their social media channels too.

I used to work with Rob McLuckie at Harvesters and Mining Supplies. He had to give up pro football with Rovers prematurely due to injury. He was good mates with Terry Curran and had a few good tales to tell. Great bloke.

Wow,

I was away at uni in 1974, but my school chum Stan Brookes was now living the dream and playing for Rovers.
I rarely got to see him play, and that's the first time I've seen a Rovers programme with his name in it.

Thank you

Hi, the press here in Devon have been in contact with the clubs. I had a call from Bobby Gould today who is also willing to help in any way he can through his many contacts.

I do believe Rob McLuckie was suposed to be going to be rather good. Only a kid when he played but well thought of. He was a wisp of a lad though. Not quite Ian Snodin esque but perhaps a taller version. Fair haired I think.
