I see she's said today that we are getting "approximately 1000 people per day" out of Afghanistan.

Given her track record of being sketchy with numbers, it'll be interesting to see what the actual figures are. And when we started.

The context is that since 2008, over 8000 Afghans have been expelled from the UK and returned to Afghanistan on the grounds that it is a safe country.

All the nonsense being spouted hypocritically by the likes of Patel need to be seen in the light of the attitude taken to political refugees by the current government.

On the matter of the military rationale, this chaos was entirely predictable, yet ignored.
Interesting take from Julian Assange in 2011 on the real motives;

Anyonee hear Dominic Rabb being interviewed yesterday?

He said in response to events in Afghanistan the aid budget to that country will be increased by 10%.

This is after he proposed and voted through a 30% cut in it last month.

So we cut the budget to the government we put in power - and increase it for the Taliban. Work that one out.

I hear Boris Johnson has warned the Taliban they will be judged by their deeds, not their words.  Oh the irony.

New Statesman giving a revised figure for deportations since 2008.
Now said to be over 15,000.
https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/2021/08/uk-has-deported-more-15000-afghan-migrants-afghanistan-2008

So the 20,000 we have said we will take, over 5 years, is in this context.
The flow of refugees to the border will probably dwarf the numbers we are saying we will take.

They were saying today that the UK will accept 20,000 over a four year period....

So that's 5,000-6,000 in the immediate aftermath of the withdrawal. None in the second year, none in the third year and none in the fourth year.

Because after the first year they'll all be dead anyway.

We shouldn’t be taking any Afghan refugees, the rest of the Muslim world is best equipped to look after fellow Muslims with their Muslim needs,

It would be on the surface to be an extremely valid point .

Personally there's a sense of duty given our own policies within Afghanistan to accept the refugees who have now fled the country with the Taliban now controlling the country .

It may not be the worst idea going forward to distance ourselves from the war mongerers across the Atlantic and actually form our own foreign policy commitments .

We had the sense to step away from Vietnam but clearly that seems to have escaped us since those times .

The US has no special relationship with this country and its time that myth was discarded for good .

And here are the official numbers.
5725 in 10 days. In what world is 573 "nearly 1000"?
