Ben Close
« on October 03, 2021, 05:33:06 pm by Campsall rover »
I see RW agreed with what i said about Ben Close being our best player yesterday.
Most on the forum said Bostock or Galbraith but i think Ben Close goes under the radar a little. He is not a spectacular player he just does the basics very well.
Good passer of the ball, links the play really well and reads the game really well.
He is just a very intelligent footballer for me and i can see why RW made him his first signing.
His best position is the front man of the 3 in midfield, that is where he links the play so well.
He is not a holding midfielder which is where he played at Ipswich due to Galbraith and Bostock missing.

It makes a massive difference when we have our 3 best midfielders playing together. At Ipswich we only had one and he was not playing in his best position.
Not really surprising we got a hammering.

His 2 best games for us have been when Smith hasn't played. Having him further advanced is why IMO. Smith plays there and Close has to sit when he does.

Agreed. Smith works hard and always puts in a shift but rarely has an end product. Not in the same class as Ben Close but having said that BC is quite an experienced player at this level and Smith is a novice.
Yesterday though he he won the ball that helped create the winning goal.

Agree with many on here. Ben had a very good game yesterday and more than made up for his wayward pass at Portman Road. I prefer him in the line up over Smith. Matt Smith is a bit 'headless chickeny' if there is such a phrase. Ben a lot more experienced yes but it shows.

He’s very good. Will come good for us with the right players around him, I’m sure of that.

Bostock, Galbraith and Close are all absolute ballers at this level. Not a single tackle between them though.

That’s a bit unfair on Galbraith I think. He won the ball back numerous times on Saturday and does rat around more than the other two.

´Rat around’ is a perfect description of Galbraith’s contribution & one much needed.

He can turn on a tanner, has a real burst of acceleration to leave opponents behind, get into space where he can look up & access his options.

He ‘looks after the ball’ much in the same way Copps did.

He’s got a yard of pace hasn’t he.

Galbraith is going to have a very good career.
Possible Premier league player. Now whether that will be with Man Utd or another Club i don’t know.
He is imo better than Herbie Kane. Bit more mobile than Herbie and has huge amount of energy. Just need a few goals out of him. That goes for all our midfielders.
Probably will end up the best loan midfielder we have ever had. Think he is only going to get better as the season goes on as he gains more experience and as the team improves the performances and results which i am confident will happen.

First half where he hounded after the ball to the half way line, span on it, then played a through ball to Dodoo who was unlucky not to finish.

Delightful. Great player. I like watching him.

I think Galbraith is good. Kane did more for us when he played. Could be down to playing with Whiteman however

Hard to believe we had Whiteman, Rowe, Kane, Wilks, Coppinger and Marquis all in the same team not all that long ago, seems like a pipe dream now!

Kane was with us a lot longer than Galbraith has been with us so far. So yes in that respect Kane has done more. No question.
Galbraith is a massive miss for us though when he does not play because we do not have any replacement.
Kane missing from our team did make a difference but not as significant imo.

am I the only one who still struggles to identify the players   ,  I can't even read the black names on the shirts to get a heads up..  there is only about 4 lads I could recognise?

I'm used to the players now but it wasn't the case for some at the start of the season. Said it before and i'll say it again, the person responsible for agreeing to emblazon names and numbers in black on the back of the shirts is a grade A moron and needs sacking asap.

The whole shirt is awful. In my eyes it actually looks nasty. I'm struggling to think of a Rovers shirt I have ever disliked as much as this one.

Me too I think it looks very non-league. Always thought the red and white more regular hoops looked distinctive and classy.

I hate the shirt too, although i did buy it. It looks and feels cheap. The red colour is a sort of 'off' red and not the vibrant red that is DRFC. With the red shorts and socks also it makes the kit look rubbish. It needs different coloured shorts to mix it up a bit.

We haven’t had a good shirt since the present sponsors took over in my opinion.

I'd assumed there was some daft EFL rule where shirt numbers have to be a different colour to the material beneath them, which was why they were black. But just checked and can't see evidence of such a rule, so looks like the decision was inexplicably taken in house. It makes little sense, especially when the Belles' have the same kit with white numbering and lettering and it looks much better.

The shirt looks like a typical colour design you'd see hung up in Matalan. The Red shorts look awful too. White shorts would be a big improvement.

The best hooped shirt we had IMO was the CIL one back in the 80's. Something similar to that, with White shorts and Black socks would look wonderful, but no one listens to me.

Shirt was God awful, like static on a red & white telly. But what really clinched it was those grey lines on the shorts focusing your attention on The Wing Co's genitalia.

Well that's a turn up. They even had lines on the shorts pointing to Frank Beresford's knackers back in the 30s.

Isn't it all down to the font designated for the numbers by the EFL. They tried them in white but they didn't work due to the numbers not being solid. The Belles numbers are solid so it works no problem for them. I'm sure SM explained it at some point previously.

Yes i asked the question as soon as i saw how much better it worked on the Belles kit. Its a different font.
