A pint of Barnsley Bitter please.
« on October 12, 2021, 11:02:39 pm by Colin C No.3 »
In the 60’s from the bar at the back of the Pop Stand.

I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to go ‘fill me boots’ at halftime.

By the time I was it had closed up!

Brewed today by Acorn Brewery in Elsecar or Stancil Brewery .

Never tasted the original so can't do the comparison .

The old lads say Stancil is nearer the original taste .

... both good & Acorn is my fav. Always on Little Plough - usually on Windmill Thorne. Old No 7 Barnsley is always good

Too young to have got served in Pop Stand Bar so had to go to TBar. Was it joined on and were they built using Glass block windows ?

Brilliant times get my place at the little wall around the pitch then at half time up to the bar where the old fella would get me a bottle of coke and a bag of crisps. Then back to the front which way we were kicking

I’m sure Acorn are on an industrial unit in Wombwell

Isn't it a similar taste to John Smith's? which I was disappointed to find was chilled the last time I had one, I prefer bitter at room temperature.

Barnsley is a permanent cask at Three Horse Shoes on North Bridge. Think its Acorn but not sure. Always a good pint though.

That’s how I remember it Wolf, with the glass bricks.

Perhaps BiargeBob could give us more insight having worked in it.

Was it a rush to get a pint before the second half kicked of BiargeBob, (like on the Keepmoat concourse), how many people were serving on, how many pumps, was there seating, what time did it open & close?

Long before when it was much higher - seemed to be really high when you climbed up it
Can be seen here with Bars at back - with glass "walls"

Seating? There was hardly room to stand up. There were three of us on duty, I only worked evening games, sorry the memory lets me down on how many pumps. Obviously there was a mad rush 10 minutes before half time & if they were losing we had to stay open after half time. I think the chap who ran it after I was there was called Barry Heaton, I believed he worked at British Ropes.

I remember seeing a glow of orange light from those glass blocks when viewed from the main stand terrace, circa 1980.  Was it still open then or would this have been a reflection of street lights etc.?  Then I used the pop side from aged 15 in 1984 so wouldn’t have used the bar..

Surely the owl roosted in that TV cabinet suspended from one of the pillars holding up the Popside roof? You can see the thing in Wolfie's cracking picture.

Was that tv box ever used to your knowledge Bob?

I have a vague memory of seeing bodies (live ones!) but can’t recall ever seeing signs of games being ‘video’d’ from there.

It shows the loss of crowd capacity that occurred after the stands' demolition when you consider the roof supports at the front of the stand were where the back of the new stand was erected!

Hi Colin

I don't have any specific memory of it ever being used but why on Earth would it have been put there if it wasn't?

The obvious game that comes to mind is that match against Luton Town, complete with a young Malcom Macdonald who were top of the third division at the time and going places. We were a decent side near the top of the league too and we beat them 2-0 I think for their first defeat of the season. Big crowd there and it would have been a good match to video. Timing must be roughly right - but I'm guessing now...

Would not think so but bedalerover idler selby etc may hold that info

bedale mentioned Forest Brown which was Whitbread's whereas Darley's offered Nut Brown

I also remember Camerons [**M.H] was painted on Pop Stand Roof and Hull Brewery was painted of front of Main Stand front but were they merely "adverts" or was there product being sold as well ?

 **M.H [Malton / Hartlepool]

I thought the gantry was used frequently for filming first-team games.
F.J. Wilson bought a cameras so that all matches could be filmed and then studied by manager, coaches and players. That as why the wooden loft was built. I don't know how long filming went on but those films would have been great to see now. King Alick and games like the Aldershot 7-0.
Frank Wilson had a vision for the club whereas Hubert Bates was more interested in his bank balance.

I remember when I first started drinking legally, 1965, I sometimes drank in the Peacock in Stainy, and if my memory serves  me right it was a Sam Smith's pub. I do remember my first pints of Barnsley Bitter, a strange experience for me, as it had an almost yellowy head on it, and I could smell it before I tasted it as I brought it to my mouth. It wasn't to my liking, and I settled on Sam's bottled Nut Brown ale when I drank in the Peacock.
