Another HT Board photo for BobG

Darlington's winner was a fluke goal. It was at the town end and was intended as a cross from the left-wing by Harry Kirk. It sailed into the corner of the net over the keepers head.

We were 2nd & a win would take us above them.As the players warmed up I watched open mouthed as a Darlington player flicked the ball up & caught it on the back of his neck. WOW!First time I’d ever seen such ‘a trick’ done live. “Did you see that?”, I said to my brother, “This lot must be good”.I knew there was a big crowd because I spent all the game crushed up & craning my neck to see the action. 22,000 in Belle Vue that evening as Rovers went down 1-0 in a tense game. The record crowd for a 4th Division game was even reported that evening on the BBC News.‘Laurie’s Lads’ went on to lift the title that year of course in a season that will live long in my heart.
It was a big terrace that weren't it?! Floodlights on the back of the pylon at the corner with the Popside to light up Donny Town's pitch too.
Biggest crowd i have been been present at Belle Vue was 20.000 and something, can’t remember exactly v Hull City in a League Cup tie in Nov 1975I was stood at the Town end and it was very full to say the least as was the whole ground. How the heck did they get another 17.000 on top of that figure into the ground against Hull City nearly 30 years earlier. The ground was the same size in the 40’s as it was in the 70’s so it would seem impossible to have an attendance of 37,000 Quite unbelievable really.

SS if you could actually see the game properly against Spurs with a 32,000 crowd in the ground, you must have been at least 16yrs old which makes BB and Wolf mighty ancient. Are they both going to matches in mobility scooters these days.Gosh i do feel young now.

The reason I could see the game was that my Uncle took me, as my Dad never took me anywhere, and he made sure I was against the wall in front of the Pop side.My best memory of the game was seeing Danny Blanchflower play.

Talking of mobility scooters, can you remember the little light blue mobility cars that were allowed on at the side of the pitch?
