Was there a “toilet” at the back of the bar behind the stand or was it just the open ones in the corners of Pop Stand

I have a "feeling" that there were bogs [being kind] out the back of the Stand right on top of the embankment looking out over Airport / houses

That’s a cracking photo Wolf.

I was stood on the Rosso Terrace in 1968 when we played top of the table Darlington on a night match. We were 2nd & a win would take us above them.

As the players warmed up I watched open mouthed as a Darlington player flicked the ball up & caught it on the back of his neck. WOW!
First time I’d ever seen such ‘a trick’ done live. “Did you see that?”, I said to my brother, “This lot must be good”.

I knew there was a big crowd because I spent all the game crushed up & craning my neck to see the action. 22,000 in Belle Vue that evening as Rovers went down 1-0 in a tense game.

The record crowd for a 4th Division game was even reported that evening on the BBC News.

‘Laurie’s Lads’ went on to lift the title that year of course in a season that will live long in my heart.

Darlington's winner was a fluke goal. It was at the town end and was intended as a cross from the left-wing by Harry Kirk. It sailed into the corner of the net over the keepers head.

It was a big terrace that weren't it?! Floodlights on the back of the pylon at the corner with the Popside to light up Donny Town's pitch too.

Just shows colindouglashandshake how big the Pop side was before it and Rosso End were altered

Forgive my eyesight but there both had 40 steps +/- a couple so plenty of room on both of them though it did seem rammed for that Darlo 0-1 game for sure

Was always fascinated with that as a kid and how a letter related to a certain game.
That and the golden goal competition

The girls who sold the golden goal tickets formed their own football team- the Belle Vue Belles, later to become Doncaster Belles.

Biggest crowd i have been been present at Belle Vue was 20.000 and something, can’t remember exactly v Hull City in a League Cup tie in Nov 1975

I was stood at the Town end and it was very full to say the least as was the whole ground.
How the heck did they get another 17.000 on top of that figure into the ground against Hull City nearly 30 years earlier.

The ground was the same size in the 40’s as it was in the 70’s so it would seem impossible to have an attendance of 37,000  Quite unbelievable really.

I was stood on the Main Stand side for the Darlington game with 22,000 odd and literally couldn't move.  Packed in like sardines and all around the ground looked the same.

It was a double fluke BB because it was a mis-hit shot that landed at his feet for him then score. We pummelled them apart from that.

I think that Brighton had a couple of about 30,000 gates near the end of the season when they went up in 1964.

Apparently, Bob, it held 15000, including the corner that went round to the Pop side.

Yes, but at least I had to go through the kids' entrance. I saw BB and Wolfie that day going through the OAPs' entrance.

SS if you could actually see the game properly against Spurs with a 32,000 crowd in the ground, you must have been at least 16yrs old which makes BB and Wolf mighty ancient.
Are they both going to matches in mobility scooters these days.

Gosh i do feel young now.

Gosh i do feel young now.

I was quite a few years younger than 16, Camps. The reason I could see the game was that my Uncle took me, as my Dad never took me anywhere, and he made sure I was against the wall in front of the Pop side.

My best memory of the game was seeing Danny Blanchflower play.

I assumed you probably were less than 16 well just.  :)

Great memories SS
My 1st memory was age 7 in 1962/63 seeing the great John Charles play for Leeds United.

Talking of mobility scooters, can you remember the little light blue mobility cars that were allowed on at the side of the pitch?
