Best Sunday Lunch in Donny?
« on October 23, 2021, 12:00:49 pm by KeithMyath »
Every time I travel up to Donny, always struggle to get a decent Sunday lunch. Is there any hidden gems that anyone can recommend? Black bull at Hatfield is our go to, but can anyone recommend any other? Don’t mind paying for quality, we’re spoilt here in Cornwall as there isn’t a chain pub on site. Thanks in advance!

Have a look on https://www.facebook.com/groups/eatingoutindoncaster

The Hallcross and The Regent get good reviews.

The Newton at Sprotbrough does an excellent Sunday carvery.

Very reasonably priced too. You have to book though, it can get very busy.

I was told they are selling up but it still seems to be under the same management for now.

That's what I was told but it doesn't seem right to me.

The Slug is a fairly premium town centre chain that does Prosecco and smashed avacado on toast.

The Newton is a family pub that does decent quality food at a reasonable price. It's very popular with the local pensioners.

It seems lime a very big change, somehow I don't see it working.

Hence why I said at Hatfield and not in Hatfield. Its on high levels banks which is part of the Hatfield area but not part of the town . It’s address is Hatfield, as apposed to “in between Thorne, Hatfield & Crowle” it’s in Yorkshire by a whisper.

What is Mount Pleasant Hotel like these days?

It was my parents favourite for years, since my Dad died my Mum can't go back, very sad.

Since they stuck the glass front on I thought it lost some of the charm. Not bad food but more corporate. They no longer do Yorkshire pudding as a starter on Sunday which I think is a crime.

They were being kicked out after the pub was sold to Stonegate Group (the chain that runs Slug and Lettuce) the new group have now offered them a contract

I hope they can come to some agreement. That place is a real asset to lower Sprotbrough.

I completely forgot about the ship! I always forget it’s there with it not being on the main drag. We’re booked in up at the Crown hotel for our next visit as have been told that’s very good. Will give the Ship a try as well

We went to the Ship at Bawtry a couple of years ago. We ordered food and got drinks while we waited for it to arrive. After a couple of pints, I said to our lass "I'm sure that couple over there being given their meals came in after us, I'm going to ask at the bar where ours is." The barmaid said "haven't you got your meals yet? I'll go and check." She came back and said sorry, but your order had fallen off the board and onto the floor, and the chefs had finished cooking and were about to leave!"

I said, "Ah well, these things happen." The barmaid said, "The least I can do is not charge you for the drinks."

Not a badly spent hour really, and we got fish & chips on the way home with the money we'd saved!

Another vote for the Ship at Bawtry and King William at Scaftworth although the latter is quite small so probably requires booking.

Bay Horse in Hatfield used to be decent but couldn't comment on it currently as haven't been since it changed hands recently.

Uncle Tom's in Carcroft. I've done a fair few and that's number 1 from me
