Cruise ship holidays
« on November 16, 2021, 08:15:06 pm by normal rules »
This is the fastest growing sector in the tourism industry.
Research shows that per passenger mile, a cruise ship is twice as bad as long haul flights for carbon emissions.
Then there is the cost to the ocean with many cruise ships pumping grey water and sewage straight into the oceans upon which they sail.
It’s a largely un regulated area of travel also.
I was provoked into writing this by an ad that cropped up on my Facebook page trying to promote a cruise to Antarctica. There was a picture of a huge floating block of flats belching diesel fumes backed by pristine snow caped mountains, surrounded by icebergs. Then there was another pop up advertising trips to Norwegian Fjords to see the Northern Lights.
It was a pretty offensive sight. All in the name of tourism.

Still, in years to come we will have a use for these floating high rise.
Climate refugees will be living on them.
Perhaps some of our unlucky descendants .

If you knew me, you’d know that I don’t do boats.
Got sick on a cross channel ferry. And no, I was not going on holiday. I was HM forces living in Germany before the tunnel was dug.
The thought of spending a “holiday” on one would be a living hell for me.

Ha, that reminds me of the time I was sick on a boat before it left the harbour in Estapona, en route to Morocco.

My wife still rolls out the story on occasion at my expense. We stopped at a services before boarding at Dover. I bought a chicken tikka sandwich. Line the stomach and all that.
It was a pretty rough crossing. About 15 minutes in I just had to get up on the poop deck for some fresh air. There was a party of school kids up there and me. I hurled up the chicken tikka in front of said party, much to the disgust of their teacher. I then threw my head over the side and emptied the rest of my asian inspired snack.
Those familiar with cross channel ferries know that the sides are straight and those below in the dining seats got a very first hand view of my lunch as it splattered across their sea view windows.

I assume cruise ships are still the perfect breeding ground for covid infections too.

What must the locals think in some poorer areas of the world when these huge floating palaces of chavdom roll up on their shores?
