His actual words are f**king stupid. He gives four examples of women taking on iconic roles, ignores the hundreds and hundreds that haven't, and concludes from that that young men are so f**king stupid and impressionable, they are committing crime because there are only bad role models left.

Doesn't help that he has that boring whiny voice of the boring whiny t**t that you desperately want to get to the other side of the table from when you go out for a meal with a customer.

There's a bit of a point to what he says. The way he expresses it and the examples he uses are not necessarily the best but it's hardly a big outrage part of what he says is right.

Kids do need good stable environments with role models.  He makes a valid point that masculinity is currently frowned upon in some ways and it shouldn't be. The is right that we don't need to change the gender of many characters (IE James bond though I take issue with Dr who, the essence of that character is fluid).  However he does make a point that's fair, there is a diminishing amount of masculinity which is fair to debate.

My company this week has been debating how it can work not to sideline males as part of gender equality etc. It is the right conversation to have for all genders, races, sexual orientations.

Changing characters IE bond for the sake of it is diminishing the point in the first place, there are and should be plenty of programmes with strong female leads (eg the handmaid's tale that touches on this subject in very dark ways).

But he's really not trying to start an intelligent debate on male role models though is he? He's choosing a couple or three high profile cases where woman have been given leading roles, and he's exaggerating that as part of a Culture War sally. It is simply stupid to say, as he does, that there's some sort of effort to push all men out of positive roles, and all that's left are examples of men as sociopaths. Talking in those terms means he's not trying to engage in a sensible debate. Hes trying to wind up people who he reckons are gullible and impressionable.

There's no end of male role models in the media. Hollywood is still always glamourising overtly masculine traits, it almost never holds back when it comes to things like fighting and guns.

This bloke is picking up on just the couple of rare, high profile examples that have dared to challenge the long held orthodoxy. And suddenly it's a threat to wider masculinity.

I don't disagree his point is poorly made but it has some validity.  Read his statement on it on his Twitter, which for some reason I can't link to.

Of course in the modern world the usual social media bunch pick up on it and create a bigger story.  If he's creating division as you believe then the left on social media have been easily caught in his fishing attempt.
