And he didn't have the Federal Records laws to deal with either.

I mean isn't that them stating they've done a pretty poor job? It's their job to verify the company's financial records at the point in time not years and years later.

The value of the properties isn't in the company records, though. They're supposed to be based on independent valuations which are the responsibility of the company to be undertaken, so the accountants had to accept what Trump's companies told them. The properties were deliberately overvalued when used to borrow from banks, and deliberately undervalued on tax returns. Usually at the same time.

It's the responsibility of the auditors to verify and accept the accuracy of them.  They shouldn't sign them off without valid checks. Restatement and revaluation of these things is very common.

I try not to look at American politics these days. Because, frankly, the Republican Party scares the living bejaysus out of me.

They've just announced a policy stance that the attempted coup last year was "a legitimate political discourse."

Just absorb that thought.

Violent insurrection, intended to scare Congress into cancelling Biden's election and keeping Trump in power is "legitimate political discourse."

Someone mentioned Gabriel Gatehouse's podcast The Coming Storm a few days back. It truly is a chilling study of how far into fascism the Republican party has slid.

In held twas I.

It is a fascinating podcast for a number of reasons. One of which is it shows how easy it is for people who believe in weird conspiracies (some of which they have made uo themselves) to get other people to believe those conspiracies, and gain political power and wealth for themselves on the back of that.
