One of my mates is a plumber and he now refuses to work in Hexthorpe.
The last twice he worked there his van was broken into while he was in the customers house.

Very wise. I refuse to set foot in Hexthorpe.

It is one of the few areas in Donny that is regularly in the wider media, and not for good things.

The feeling of decline and areas becoming more dangerous isn't unique to Donny.

I've just spent a couple of weeks in Hounslow. Now that's an area that has declined. There is a website where ex-residents speak of an almost idyllic childhood in the years between the 50s and 80s. Plenty of good employment in factories like Firestone tyres and Gillette.

Now the high street is stripped of the old department stores and high street brands. It's listed as one of the top 20 most dangerous places in the country.

Generally, I think the country has been going down the shitter at least since the 70s. It's most keenly felt in areas with an industrial past.

I remember the first time I saw a street beggar in Donny.

It was the early 80s. He was sat on the steps by the entrance to the Arndale centre in the tunnel from the North bus station. As a young lad I was quite shocked at the time.

I don't know if I'd just not noticed before or what but it was definitely a new thing to me.

I was a teenager in the early 90's and i remember a couple of characters that used to frequent the town centre. Both were carribbean i think and one bloke was called Earl and he used to hang around the Frenchgate and outside. Nice bloke it seemed actually. Not sure whether he was homeless or not.

The other was a large lady who would call you over, make a 'come here' gesture with her index finger and say 'hey you...........come 'ere' and then point to her crotch!!

Always ran for the hills!

Some characters in Donny in those days.

The land that time forgot, I lived there, Coppice Rd, as an early teenager. The only good thing was our garden backed onto the woods and I spent hours roaming around there with our dog

I used to go in Highfields WMC in mid to late 90''s as ex was from Woodlands.

Used to drive the loop around Highfields too just to see how many houses we could count that were boarded up lol.

Can only speak for the parts I knew but some parts of it definitely sound ropey as hell now. Shame cos some of the outlying villages were decent even though people had little.

My mates dad owned and ran Richards hairdressers on the main road in Bentley for donkeys years. I also had my second tattoo done at the tattoo place t'other side of the hill in the 90's. Used to play tennis in the concrete courts in Bentley Park as a yoof. Lots of memories of Bentley, despite living in Scawsby.

Must admit when i go back through Bentley, it appears to be a 'rougher' than i remember. No offence to anyone living there of course.

CDH, the guy who did your tattoo is my brother; and he's still there in the same shop now.

He's made a fortune over the last 25 years or so, and he now tattoos more women than men.

Ah it's a small world Steve. I decided to go to his tattoo place as my first tattoo was this really decrepit old bloke who used to have a roll up in one trembling hand and the tattoo gun in his other. His place in the 90's was on that corner facing the big roundabout near where vets for pets / copley road end is now.

I escaped without infection from that bloke on the roundabout.

Apart from one that I had done in Scarborough all mine were done in Rosso. Gattison Lane I think. An old lad called Ossie I think. I seem to remember that if he’d had a pint or two they might not be as good as expected.
I ended up with 13, the dearest 12/6d or 62 pence these days.
It cost me over £900 to have five of them lasered off about 1999.

Ha, so random CDH. I had my first tatt done by Jim and 2nd one done by the bloke in Bentley early 90s as well. I remember having to knock on Jims house door to get him to open the shop, he answered the door in slippers drinking one of those small bottles of beers. He smoked rollies and carried on drinking all the way through tattooing me as well, putting the world to rights as I sat there like a rabbit in the headlights with my mate. He kept inside the lines for most of it though so was quite impressed. I'd have been 17 and had a few sleepless nights after that thinking I must have caught all sorts. Was the first one in our 'group' to get a tatt though & thought I was the DBs. White Rose of Yorkshire, about the size of an old 50p on my upper arm that my daughter now calls my spiders web. Not sure he could work now though, more like having an operation with all the cleanliness.

Haha great post! Yeah me the same. Thought i'd be a goner from some blood infection or summat after that but still here anyway. Can you just imagine him working these days!? He'd have no chance with all the health and safety etc and i'd have to say on this occasion - it is probably for the best lol.

Yes, Idler; it was either Rosso or Thurnscoe in those days. I had mine done in Thurnscoe.

Sorry to hear about Jim - had my first tatt there too about 1981. At the time he was considered to be one of the best around. The standard of tattooing has however come on leaps and bounds. Don’t know if it’s the artists, the equipment or both
