Imran Khan

No, not the ex-cricketer, ex-Pakistani Prime Minister. The MP for Wakefield, who has been found guilty of sexual assault. If he's sentenced to more than 12 months, a by-election will automatically be triggered.

However, if it's less than 12 months, a "recall petition" can be started, which only needs to be signed by 10% of the electorate to bring about a by-election.

Since the allegations were made, he's been suspended from the Tory Party, and has been sitting as an independent. This could be a huge opportunity for Labour to win back a red wall seat that they lost in 2019.

What is 'sexual assault'? I never did know. I presume less than rape but more than holding hands? Presumably also with an adult rather than a minor?  Does it involve the use of force? 'Assault' implies that - in my mind anyway.

Yes, Bob, the victim was only 15 at the time.

Another victim came forward and gave evidence at the trial, stating that Khan had done similar things to him, after plying him with booze and drugs.

Oh...

My memory may be faulty here but it suggests to me that the vast majority of cases of MPs like this, going back decades, all seem to have the same profile.

''However, another Tory MP, Crispin Blunt, said he was certain Khan was innocent and that the trial “was nothing short of an international scandal”.

“I am utterly appalled and distraught at the dreadful miscarriage of justice that has befallen my friend and colleague Imran Ahmad Khan, MP for Wakefield since December 2019,” the Reigate MP said in a statement''

''Crispin Blunt quits as LGBTQ+ group chair after Imran Ahmad Khan comments
Tory MP quits as chair of parliamentary group and withdraws comment criticising conviction of colleague''

''After an outcry from MPs across the political spectrum, Blunt deleted the tweet defending convicted MP Imran Ahmad Khan and removed the comment from his website after an intervention from Tory whips overnight.''

And so he should

Resigned as an MP, that will be one red wall seat returning to the fold

That must mean either he knows he's getting more than a year, or, his local association has nade it plain that they will unseat him if he stays. Even worse for his CV that would be.

For someone who doesn't vote Conservative you never miss an opportunity to big them up, Hound.

I really don't  get the point you're  making Hound. If you're  trying to say the Tory party has a wonderful bunch of local officials please don't be so silly.

Local associations, of any party, want their local MP to be of their party. It gives them status, kudos and reflected glory as well as ensuring their political views prevail. What sort of result will the next general election see if the local association leave this shit in place?? Personal self esteem and glory down the pan... This would be an entirely human yet selfish act by the local association.

I thought it would be appropriate for fair minded posters to recognise something good that has been done.
FFS, people take enough of their daily time to slag them off.
Maybe some aren’t fair minded though.

Bob, of course I am also delighted that Khan has been ousted, his actions are disgusting.
I was suggesting that you might acknowledge the response of those that forced his hand.
Is that so bad?

And this guy has gone as well, Enfield Conservative Association chair Colin Davis has resigned from the Tory Party 'forthwith.'
Says he's 'embarrassed and ashamed' of pic of him dressed in full Nazi military gear, but 'he'd forgotten about the event 40 years ago.'
