Players released by other clubs
« on May 11, 2022, 12:57:27 am by Glyn_Wigley »
Other club are starting announce their retained and non-retained lists. Are there any players who would be good - but realistic - targets from those being released?

Vadaine Oliver released by Gillingham. Striker, 6ft 2in scored ten goals last season and I think he would add something to the squad we haven’t got. He’s thirty years old and originates from Sheffield.

Ive noticed Oliver a few times when hes played against us. Big and strong and looks like he has some good pace and movement about him. This was the type of forward that we desperately missed out on last season after the rumpus with Bogle.

Id say if we'd signed someone like him(or sorted out our differences with Bogle) we would of scraped through and stayed up.

Lets see if we can get this right this time. If you want a big striker he has to be: Big, strong, fast, some semblance of ball skills and most importantly as hungry as F**k.

Vadaine Oliver won absolutely everything in the air when we played them - he’d be great. We need someone who can make it stick up top for Griffiths, Rowe etc to play off.

Greg Leigh - attacking left back getting released by Morcambe.

Conor Thomas - released by Cheltenham. Centre Midfielder. Actually played with McSheffrey at Coventry. Decent experience.

Marc Beevers - experienced centre back released by Peterborough - too optimistic?

How much money have we pissed away trying to find a forward to lead the line? Bingham, Kwame, all the Premier League loan lads who didn’t actually score many goals actually, Agard, Bogle, Dodoo. Money just pissed away. If we had actually invested in someone properly post-Marquis we might have been in a better pleased. Huge turnover upfront, none of them delivered what we needed.

How many strikers do we have on the books currently? I think any new additions will be dependent on other players moving on.

Rumours about Hiwula moving on, hasn’t worked out for him at Rovers. Not sure we wasted much on Bingham and Thomas as they were short term deals albeit again not good enough although you couldn’t knock Thomas for effort.
There were plenty on here questioning signing Marquis when we did

That's the trouble though, if you are after that type of striker then you need to get the right type in, of the names you mentioned only Kwarme and Bogle fit this bill, Kwarme long was past his best and we all know the issue with Bogle. All the other names are not hold up merchants and require a different type of game plan to succeed, players like Sharp and Heffernan thrived in playing up top because we didn't expect them to play this type of game.

The trouble we seem to have is we keep playing square pegs into round holes, Fergi and Dodo are the most recent cases, just rank poor planning, poor player scouting and selection.

But if you shop for the cheaper own brands you never get the best quality product unless you fall on lucky.

But you quite often get the same product in a different wrapper but cheaper

Just had another child and bought a big house in Millhouses. He wants to move back north and we would be in a good position for his signature or so I'm told. Whether GM is interested may be a different matter.

And I’m not talking here about another Marquis. I mean someone who could deliver 8-10 a season in League One but be a reliable and credible starter, able to weather a full season and be a focal point for us. Instead of a full order we got lots of half measures which were ultimately very expensive by comparison and delivered nothing other than disruption and dissatisfaction.

Marquis is a free agent isn’t he ? At his age I think the championship dream is over and he should look to find a home for 2 years to enjoy him self , step up Doncaster rovers

What
I was told marquis is going Charlton

What after the way their fans treated him after the Play Off semi at their place, must be mad if he signs for them scumbags.

One as you can’t count either Hiwula or Dodoo as strikers

I've always been impressed with Greg Leigh when I've seen him play against us. Not sure if he's actually that good though or if he's just one of those players who you get a false impression of as he always happens to turn up against us. Also known as the Dean Brill Paradox.

Conor Washington has been released by Charlton, but I very much doubt he’ll drop down to League 2 unless he was offered a good longish contract

Feel like Joe Mattock (left back) and Angus MacDonald (centre back - if we ended up needing one) could both do a job here. Released by Rotherham today.

Left back is a priority, but centre back depends on Anderson and Owulu? After that, a goalscorer and then midfield needs improving.

Mattock’s a good shout, Jon, but can we afford him?

Angus MacDonald would be a top centre back in League Two .

Decent kid as well whose over come some very serious health issues .

Hard to say whether they’re realistic targets. But I highlighted them as it’s sometimes easier to get a player based locally.

Angus MacDonald is really good friends with Kieran Sadlier and was at the Keepmoat* (for that reason in all fairness) when we played Bolton.

*Edit - I mean the Eco Power.

Saw Mattock and immediately thought he’s the kind of experienced LB we are desperate for.

Unsure if any injury issues?
